Hi everyone,
Just wanted to share a solution I found after struggling with SSRS integration in a Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations (on-premises) deployment.
When running RunReportsSetup or configuring SSRS, the process fails with an error during the encryption key restore step. You may see errors like:
RunReportsSetup
Microsoft.ReportingServices.WmiProvider.WMIProviderException: The type initializer for 'Microsoft.Data.SqlClient.SqlAuthenticationProviderManager' threw an exception.
or
Failed to delete the encrypted content in the report server database. Unable to back up the SQL Server Reporting Services encryption key. The operation failed with error code 2148734260.
The issue is caused by a version incompatibility with SSRS 2019. Specifically:
SSRS 15.0.1104.39 (May 2025 CU) is not compatible with key restore/backup in D365 F&O setup.
SSRS 15.0.1102.1047 (February 2023 CU) works perfectly.
Uninstall the current SSRS version and reinstall SSRS 15.0.1102.1047. After that, the key restoration and full setup complete successfully.
💡 Tip: Keep a backup of that specific SSRS installer, as Microsoft only publishes the latest version.
Hope this helps someone avoid hours of debugging. If anyone needs the exact build number or wants to verify the version, you can check in Reporting Services Configuration Manager or the Program Files path.
