Form data source outer join shows blank records

I have added a data source to my form with an outer join.  I want to display all the records on the 'left' of this outer join but only matching records on the 'right'.
Not sure why but my grid is showing blank records for the 'left' datasource where it doesn't match:
 
 
These are service order lines (SMAServiceOrderLine).  I have joined inventory journal transactions (InventJournalTrans) against the service order lines through a custom relationship on an extension.  I debugged and found that the join is working as expected.  I suspect this is just how this functions.

    Yes, I am aware.  Whereas my InventItemTrans is an outer join I expected the grid in my form, which has InventItemTrans as the Datasource, to only show matching records.

    Yes, it has it's 'Join Source' property set to 'SMAServiceOrderLine'.
