Re: AX2012 R2. Is it possible to structure batch reservation (particularly for sales orders) so that a batch is reserved but not a warehouse location?

Only in AX 2012 R3 is it possible to define at which level reservations occur.
If you're using AX 2012 R2, and you're using functionality known as WMSII, you can ensure that the reservation made by the sales order is modified when the order is released for picking. AX can change the reservation to a location that AX believes is the location the item will be picked from.
