Have you tried manually configuring an ODBC/ODC connection to link the first server to the second?

It sounds like a missing trust relationship.

Step one http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/968872 two solution methods, wizard or manual.

Step two - Still suffer connection issue check user accounts can be authenticated for SQL database. Look in SQL Server Management Studio connect to server, expand Security expand Logins. Decide how users can authenticate either Windows Authentication or SQL Server Authentication then setup appropriate account(s).

    Good luck.
