VPN connection for GP

(0) ShareShare

Posted on by 65

We have a remote location which is currently accessing GP through terminal services.  We would like to have a more secure connection using a VPN connection.  Our partner has indicated that there may be issues with a VPN connection.  Has anyone tried it?  Is it working?  Is it supported?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Leslie, No worries. I read the thread and was a bit confused as to all of the answers. Thought I would throw my .02 in. Cheers! Perry

Gail, I think many of the respondents misunderstood your question. The way I am understanding your query is that the remote workstation will establish a VPN connection to the Corporate network. Then log into a Terminal Server that has the GP application installed. If this is correct then it will work. If you are running the application from a Terminal Server, then you should be OK. As the application is running on the Terminal server, only screenshots and keystrokes are actually transmitted over the VPN. I have set this up for plenty of clients this way. I do not recommend running the application on a workstation that is accessing a SQL Server over a VPN connection as it will be intolerably slow. Perry Smith GPITConsultant@gmail.com

    Gail,

It simply does not work!  We do, however, use a VPN connection for all of our remote offices to get them into the terminal server at the main head quarters.  I tried using a local client over VPN to the GP server, to test it out, and it just will not work.  Your best bet is to secure the terminal server traffice over VPN.

I agree with William.  We have a VPN connection and once and a great while we use GP over it without terminal server.  Its very very slow and will not provide a good end user experience.

    Hi, Gail,

You may use VPN as add-on for security, but do not use it to replace the existing terminal services for access GP. In other other word, as for remote users to access GP, they use VPN to establish secure tunnel across the internet, and then they logon GP via terminal service (eg. remote desktop).

In other words, the remote user computer should not installed with GP and ODBC to the remote SQL database. They just need to have VPN and Terminal client software only.

Hi Gail, I second Mark on this, and not only because it's not support, but also because it is very slow. Usualy a remote connexion is rarley set on speed much higher then 5-7 Mbs which is far from the 100Mbs that you get at least on the local network. The GP client is very demanding in network trafic sometimes and you will feel this very soon when trying to connect remotly (VPN or not does'nt make a difference). Stick with terminal server on Citrix, your users will bless you ;-). Have a great day, Beat

Run, don't walk, away from that idea. Lots of folks have tried it and the answer is always the same. It is not supported because it doen't work. You will have pain and frustration. If you want a more secure connection you are better off applying better security to the Terminal Server session
