Microsoft Dynamics GP (Archived)

Direct PC Install, Terminal Sever, Virtualized App? Which do you use?

We have been using a Terminal Server environment to host our Dynamics GP and MS Office for over 10 years. We are considering a change and am looking for other people's experiences both pro and con on the various ways to present GP to users.

Terminal Server

Pro's

  • Easy maintenance (just 2 terminal servers to do GP updates on)
  • Fast since SQL is in same rack as servers

Con's

  • Some people get confused having a local desktop and remote desktop

I'd like to know what others are doing and what your experiences are.

    I would say most of my clients now would use Terminal Servers - for all of the reasons you state above.

    Direct PC install can be good - but it is definitely increased maintenance.  You have to be careful that changes are rolled out to all PC's, shared reports dictionaries etc.

    An advantage of direct PC could be that when testing changes to reports etc you can deploy to one machine only with a local reports dictionary and make sure everything is fine before rolling out to others.

    I would say generally though, Terminal Server would still be the preferred option for most sites.

    Term server, much better than local desktop (upgrades, rolling out changes, debugging weird errors).  All users can learn the term server environment, just show them where to click.
