Groups - Security Permission

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I created a security role that grants users read-only access to groups so they cannot delete or amend anything. However, the group members section (connections) is not read-only. There's still full access to editing the contacts and changing their connection and I'm not sure where to access that permission.

In the administration I went to the security role, and on the custom entities tab I selected the user access level for everything because I only want the owner of the group to have full access to editing, assigning, sharing, etc. Is this the right place to restrict access? If so, why are the connections not grayed out like everything else on the page?

Modifying the security privileges for contacts and connections will affect everyone with that security role.

Could you clarify what you mean by "group". CRM 2011 has teams, users, roles, and business units that can be configured for security and access management.

The only "group" is a resource group, but that's used for scheduling services so I'm not sure if that's what you are referring to.

Will modifying the contact and connection (write, append, and append to) settings change permissions across the entire organization rather than just the groups?

If you want to prevent users from editing contacts as well as connections between contacts and groups (which I presume is a custom entity), then you'll need to address the following privileges:

    Contact: write, append, append to

    Connection: write, append, append to

    Group: write, append, append to
