Hi everyone,

I’m trying to integrate Azure Maps into my application and need to generate an Azure Maps key for API access. Could someone guide me through the steps to obtain an Azure Maps subscription key from the Azure portal? Also, are there any best practices for managing and securing the key?
I have the same question (1)

Good morning, afternoon, or evening - depending on your location :)
    Hope you are well today!

Here’s a step-by-step guide to generate an Azure Maps subscription key and some best practices for managing it:
    Generating an Azure Maps Key
    1. Sign In to Azure Portal:
    2. Create an Azure Maps Account:
      • Navigate to the Search Bar and type Azure Maps.
      • Select Create Azure Maps Account or choose an existing one if you already have it.
      • Fill in the required details, such as Subscription, Resource Group, and Instance Name.
      • Choose a pricing tier that fits your needs.
    3. Locate the Keys:
      • Once the Azure Maps account is created, go to the Azure Maps Resource in your portal.
      • Under Settings, click on Keys.
      • You’ll see two primary keys (Key 1 and Key 2). These keys can be used for API access.
    4. Copy the Key:
      • Copy one of the keys to integrate it into your application.

Best Practices for Managing and Securing Azure Maps Keys
    • Use Azure Managed Identity:
      • Instead of hardcoding the key into your application, leverage Azure Managed Identity to access Azure Maps securely.
      • This reduces the risk of exposing your key.
    • Rotate the Keys Periodically:
      • Rotate keys regularly to minimize the risk of unauthorized access.
      • Use both keys (Key 1 and Key 2) during the rotation process to ensure continuity.
    • Monitor Key Usage:
      • Enable Azure Monitor or other logging tools to track API key usage for anomalies.
    • Limit Access:
      • Apply appropriate restrictions to your keys to ensure they’re only accessible by your application.
    • Store Keys Securely:
      • Use secure storage solutions like Azure Key Vault to store your keys safely.
      • Avoid hardcoding keys in your source code or sharing them publicly.
Following these steps and best practices will help you integrate Azure Maps securely and efficiently.

    Hope this helps :)
