Prefered upgrade path to GP2010

Hi Everyone,

I haven't been very active in the last couple of months in the community and I appologize for this :-). Due to some resource shortage in our company, my daily work was focusing on other duties that required all my attention.

I'm currently working also on the implementation of a Warehouse Management solution and the provider expressed some reserve for certain portion of the product that will work only with GP 2010. Our current configuration is based on GP10.00.1701, SQL 2005 SP3 (9.00.4035) and Windows Server 2003. I had planned many months ago to migrate to GP2010 and SQL 2008R2, but due to time constraints, I'm looking now for just getting the best possible smooth & fast path to go to GP 2010 (R2 ?).

I would be glad to get your input about the hickups that I may encounter and which is the best to go for. All my servers are VMWare ESX VM's and I already cloned my actual GP10 configuration. Thus the upgrade path can be tested without affecting the production environment. I'm aware about the usual routines when changing the server and all the user passwords, but this is secondary to me now.

I read a couple of postings here, but most of the time they refer to upgrade of older versions or only GP and not SQL. Also, does anybody has tried an upgrade GP10 - GP2010R2 ?

Btw, have a great day and thanks in advance for your input.

We are in the process of migrating from SQL 2005, GP10 SP2 to SQL 2008 R2, GP 2010 R2.  It's all going fine.  No particular hiccups except the bug Mariano and Kuntz consulting outlined (errors when returning to GP from a customization product).  We are testing heavily and have not found a whole lot mucked up.  Our target for go-live is July 1.

I'm on the thread now, so I can see responses.  Or you can reach me off board.

    Hi Tim,

Thanks for the feedback. Which one did you took first ? SQL or GP ? did you go straight from GP10 to GP2010 R2 ? Do you have link to the bug discovered by Mariano ? Not sure it will apply to us...How long have you run now your test bed ?

Thanks in advance for the responses.

For the current upgrade, I have the luxury of new hardware.  So, SQL 2008 R2 was installed on a new server (clean).  We used the KB about moving databases to a new server as well as some Partner provided scripts (we have done this for quite a while and have a very reliable and well documented method).  So we moved GP10 SP2 data directly over to the new server.

I installed GP10 SP5 on the SQL Server (SP5 supports SQL 2008 R2).  Then I ran GP Utilities and upgraded.  This gets the “core” GP data up to where it needs to be for SQL 2008 r2.  I didn’t concern myself with ISV products at this point because they support upgrading directly from any previous version.  You will have to investigate your ISV products (if you have any).

At this point I DBCCed all GP databases and raised the database compatibility level to 100.

I installed GP 2010 r2.  Ran utilities and upgraded.  I replaced customized triggers that were lost during upgrade and upgraded ISV products.

I’ve been running since the official release date.  I’ve repeated the data roll-down process again this week.

Mariano reports on the error at dynamicsgpblogster.blogspot.com/.../unhandled-script-exception-illegal.html.

    Hi Tim,

By reading thru the Upgrade documentation from Microsoft for GP2010 R2 (Apr 28, 2011), there were a few points that ticked me on regarding 'loosing' some features... In Chapter 3 there is a mention about reports that won't upgrade from GP10 to 2010. The list is quite long and essentially it's the ones from the SOP and POP module that afraids me, because we have quite a few that are customized to our company (who doesn't ?). What's your experience on this side ? is it because most of those reports are going to be replaced by the new Word templates ?  I've heard from Microsoft that a tools was released to migrate those GP reports to the Word templates...

Also it seems that in the SmartLists, modified reports aren't going to be retained after the migration to GP 2010... Have you looked at this point if some of your SL's are missing ?

Thanks again and have a nice time

I have been spending time re-doing modifications to reports.  Ironically, the reports I'm re-modifying are not on the list in the manual.  Our modified Sales Documents ARE working without re-customizing.  I have no plans to use Word Templates.  Perhaps that will buy me some time before I have to re-do everything.  What I really wanted was to be able to generate a PDF without Adobe.  I still fail to understand why this is such a problem for the Dynamics GP development team or why it fails to be a priority for those who direct the development team.  I have complained for years (and years and years...).  Why Word support instead of SSRS?

The Word Template tool you're talking about is Partner Only. Nice! (NOT!)

I don't have a customized SmartList Reports, so that is a zero impact for me.  Smartlists themselves came accross just fine.

Based on the upgrades we've done so far to GP 2010, we have not had a single modified RW SOP or POP report not upgrade.  Just recently we had two upgrades with about 20 modified POP/SOP reports each that everyone was worried about.  Maybe we have just gotten lucky, and we always test these ahead of time, but so far so good.  You so have to make sure to go through the upgrade process for reports, not just copy the reports dictionary or export/import using package files.  Same for SmartLists, we have not seen any issues.

Most of our upgrades have been from GP 9.0, so I would expect even less issues when upgrading from GP 10.0.

Thanks Tim & Victoria for your valuable input,

That removes some pressure regarding this aspect of the upgrade path... I was surprised myself to read that statement and couldn't believe that MS just remove such a long list of reports, not speaking of losing all the customization that are in place.

Some of the benefits I remember from the new Word Templates is the ability to use the same unique template for multiple companies, which in our case translates into removing separate reports.dic files that we had to maintain in our multi-company environment. Now what are the drawbacks of using Word Templates, I've no idea (aside of training people how to use them).

We had a mind mapping crunch session this morning to jot down all the aspects of the upgrade and a few others potential hickups came up... We're using Business Portal 4.0 and currently had no intend to update this to 5.1 at the same time (to minimize downtime) as the GP 2010 upgrade. Any thoughts if BP 4.0 will still continue to work with GP 2010 after the upgrade ?

In some aspect you're right Tim regarding the Word templates ? why don't use what already exists and has been tested and proved to work for years (SSRS or Crystal reports). It just gets more confusing from version to version and I think that very few customers are really using the full potential of the GP product with all the bells and wistles coming along with it (BI, Dashboard, reporting, etc..)

I'll keep everyone posted here about the success or failure of the upgrade.
