Error on Merge : The entity cannot be updated because it is read-only.

Hi All,

When I am trying to merge two active accounts Account1(Source) and Acccount2(Target), I am ending up with the error - The entity cannot be updated because it is read-only and don't have any option to download log in Dynamics 365.

I am system administrator with full access & privileges on all the entities.

Both source and target accounts does not have any activities linked, but have few orders associated with each of them with different order status.

Please suggest on this.

    Hi,

merging works fine ouf of the box if there are inactive orders/opportunities/cases etc linked to the account being deactivated. But I am wondering if you have any custom plugins (or, possibly, workflows?) that would be kicking in.. probably on the account entity (although, that can, actually, be some other entity that's being re-parented in the process.. )?

    Hi Alex,

There are few active orders on the source account that is getting deactivated\merged into target account.

Is it required that all the records of source should be inactive for it to be merged with target ?

    Hi Suresh,

no, I don't think so (it's easy to test, but I'm pretty sure it's not the case). Do you have any custom synchronous plugins and/or real-time workflows  that would run on the entities that may be involved (account and related entities)?

    Hi Alex,

There were few custom workflows running on 'Orders' which was creating the issue. Disabling the same and merging helped. Thanks for your time.

    Hi Suresh,

I was wondering if you know what custom workflow was stopping the accounts merging? I have some accounts with the same problem, but I also have a lot of workflows that I don't want to disable. Do you know what the workflow that stopped the merge is doing? That would help me break it down a bit more for myself!

    Thanks

    Hi Michael,

I had couple of active order lines for one of the account that is considered for merge. I moved\assigned them to the other account and then the merge worked.

So during the merge one of account will be set to inactive. Hence please make sure all the associated entity records of that account are not active any more or reassign them in advance before you carry out the merge.
