Definitions groups export/import not working in AX 2012?

Hi all,

I am having problems moving base data from a TEST environment to a PROD environment using standard definitiongroups(.dat+.def). I am talking from one company in TEST to one company in PROD.

I have been using this great functionallity since Axapa 3 and it has been working really good.

The problem i have is when I use defninition groups in AX 2012. I have tried a lot of differnt setups when exporting them and importing them. But i have still not found a way to get the data correct in the PROD system. I know that there has been a lot of changes in tha database structure but still...shouldnt it work?

I have heard from collegues that there might be issues with definitions groups in AX 2012 Feature Pack that I am currently working with and that it might be fixed in AX 2012 R2.

To be able to go live in a small installationin a few days i think my choce will be to do a backup/restore of the database from TEST to PROD and the use transaction delete class (slightly modified for AX 2012). I think this might work since its a very small customer not using that many modules.

What is your experience? What other ways do you use to get data from TEST/STAGING to PROD?

Regards

Joakim

    Thanks Joris,

So database copy it is the.

I think i will make use of the old class databasedeletealltrans class + other cleaning up.

Im glad im starting my AX 2012 journey in a minor project...i wonder how to handle this in the really big ones.

    Joakim,

even in AX 2009 there were some issues moving a full company using export/import. But in AX 2012, it's next to impossible. For that very reason, Microsoft even removed the "duplicate company" feature in AX 2012, since that even no longer works reliably.

As a VAR, we've had to change our processes to accommodate this. No more dat/def, we've completely had to abandon it. Database copies is the only sure way to go, realizing that brings a ton of other things in the mix such as transactional data and other test companies.

It's a new world with Ax 2012, there's a ton that worked in previous versions that you have to abandon. Next release of AX is going even further. I know what you're going through, i started out on AX 2.5!
