Management Reporter SQL Restore in a different Domain

Posted on by 3,252

Our Client wants to restore the Management Reporter to a different Domain. After restoring the MR Database we are faced with Security error message. 'connection attempt failed. user does not have appropriate permissions to connect to the server'

How to fix this? How to reset the users and passwords?

RE: Management Reporter SQL Restore in a different Domain

Hello all - this is a old post but it speaks to my current problem exactly.

We have already moved the server to the new domain - and did not add the TRUST before.  Now my question is - can we add the trust now, login as the 'old admin' and then add the 'new admin'

    Thanks.

    Hi Sandip,

Are you a user in Management Reporter? You will receive the "user does not have appropriate permission to connect" error if you are not a Management Reporter user.

    Ryan,

I have restore MR Databse from same different SQL Server in same domain; But I am not able to connect Report Designer from client it gives error : User does not have appropriate permission to connect to the server.

What is cause of this error? How can I resolve this one?

You can export and import rows between systems and that will work fine. The only down side is you would not get the prior history of generated reports in the new MR database.

Thank you for clearing this out.

In order to avoid the domain trust part can we just use export import within MR to just import the reports, rows and columns then recreate the users security in the new domain?

    Hello,

The MR database has usernames and SIDs specific to that domain. The ideal solution would be be to enable domain trusts and add the adminstrator from the destination domain to MR before moving SQL Servers.

If that isn't possible you will likely need to work with support to try to manually update some details in the MR database.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

Are the users set up in Management Reporter or the new for windows authentication? Changing Domain, are you changing equipment? Is the machine name the same? SQL remembers this, so  you have to change the SQL name.

I'm probably way off base, but it's what comes to mind.

    Kind regards,

    leslie
