Dynamics 365 SCM Configurable Business Documents printing to ZPL printer

Does anyone know if it is possible to create a customized report for the ‘Container Contents’ to print to a ZPL printer with the new ‘Print to ZPL’ feature introduced earlier this year? They demonstrated it creating warehouse location labels printed to a ZPL printer which I tested using their provided Model/Mapping/Format configurations. They show how it uses ZPL coding in the format and instead of the output to Word or Excel, it outputs the resulting ZPL language as a text file that is sent to the network printer. I may not be 100% on the details but that’s my general understanding.

It would seem possible to do that with any of the configurable documents which has me question if it would be possible to do it for the ‘Container contents report’. Any thoughts on whether this is (or might be) possible and if it was the intended purpose of the feature?

Thanks,

Jason

ok I haven't tried that new feature, but yes, it's before. But it's printed when you are creating a container and before closing it. So, the warehouse operator creates a container and automatically would print a label to attach to the box. In large warehouses avoids human error when manipulating multiple containers.

Try create derivative report, removing attachments and change layout to the described in article  learn.microsoft.com/.../er-design-zpl-labels.

    You can reuse, existing model

    Hi Nuno,

It seems that feature is for printing container ID labels prior to and for the packing process at creation of the container. We’re looking for a container contents report (in the form of a label) that we can attach to the outside of the box upon closing after it is packed – instead of putting the laser printed SSRS report in the box.

Ideally, if we can send it to a ZPL printer it will be faster and the label would be more durable than if it was printed by a laser printer. Looks like we’re back to the idea of modifying the existing ER report which if it works the way a hope, it should serve our purpose.

Thanks again, I appreciate the feedback,

    Jason

    learn.microsoft.com/.../print-container-labels

I didn't check it yet. I only have planned to check this feature in a project that I will start in Feb.

    Hi Nuno,

That’s great news. Seems I’m not the only one looking for this functionality. Can you provide a link to info specific to ZPL printing of the Container contents report in 10.0.31. I couldn’t find anything.

    Many Thanks,

    Jason

    Ok, I was mixing reports.

Version 10.0.31 announced that packing container reporting supports ZPL out of the box. I haven't tried yet, but it's on my roadmap to try it.

You can start from existing Container contents Electronic Reporting, by creating a derived report.

You would need to adjust the report to output ZPL commands.

RE: Dynamics 365 SCM Configurable Business Documents printing to ZPL printer

    Hi Nuno.

I was referring to the Packing slip model, Container contents model mapping and Format configuration provided by Microsoft in the global repository for use with ER, not the SSRS report.

Out of the box these will output an excel file from ER. As I understand, with the new ‘Print to ZPL’ feature, the format (which you need to create/code with ZPL commands) can instead be designed to output ZPL code of the report as a text file which it will send as a ZPL print job to a network printer via print destinations.

Assuming it is in fact possible to do this as I described with any of the Configurable Business Documents through ER (in my case the ‘Container Contents’ report), I then question if it is possible to just modify these standard Microsoft configurations (Model/Model mapping/Format) to output ZPL code – or if it is necessary/better to just recreate all three configurations.

    Thanks again for your help,

    Jason

Container Contents is an SSRS report, you would need to convert this report to Electronic Reporting.
I don't think you can reuse other existing models, I think creating from scratch in ER is the way to go.

    Thanks for the feedback Nuno.

Do you know if it is possible to use the existing Packing Slip Model and Container contents model mapping configurations and if so, would they need modifications?

I assumed we would need to recreate the container contents report (Format configuration) since it needs to output the ZPL code as text. Do you know if it would be possible to modify the existing Container contents format configuration to do that or is it going to be easier/necessary to recreate it from scratch? Any thoughts appreciated.

    Thanks again,

    Jason

technically is possible, but you need to adjust Container Contents to Electronic reporting framework based on ZPL. It was some learning curve, but it's possible.
