After changing the main account category in the chart of account, I am not able to get this realised in the financial report Balance Sheet Default.

Are you making use of a Management Reporter financial Report?
If this is the case, please have a look at the report setup.
A lot of MR report make use of main account categories and if you change them, the reports might not work properly anymore.

I didn't change the account category itself but changed from one existing to another.

Is the new category that has been assigned included in the row or column structure of your Balance Sheet Report?
Yes it is in the row.
And the Problem still exists?
Have you tried updating the cached financial data?
What happens if you change the category back to the one that was originally linked to your account?
Does that make any difference?
Yes still there. I have refreshed the cache but the ledger account is still cumulated on CASH instead of CASHEQUIV.
Have you tried restarting the Management Reporter Services?
What happens if you post a new transaction on the account in AX?

I have made a new transaction just yet and it can't be found on the old AND the new row. :-(
This does not sound good.
Do you have access to the MR data mart tables and can you check whether the new transactions are there?
If they are not there then either your MR Services do not run or something else went wrong and you might have to reset the MR data mart.
Do you have a developer or admin around you who setup the MR?
