How to centralize the Add-ins folder in dynamics GP

Hi all,

I need a clarification on some thing, we have a add-in developed, we have nearly 55 users. All those users will

access that add-in from their GP. We cant deploy the add-ins going to all user machine. Is there a way to centralise the add-in folder so that we only will deploy in one folder and all users machine will be able to access the add-in?

Personally would make me uncomfortable, then so does holding central DICs, I'm too risk averse and had problems over the years.

    I'd think about the following,

    • Unnecessary network load pulling dll's over network for many users when everyone logs in at 9am. OK if you have a good fast reliable network.
    • Performance for above reason too
    • Reliability during network outages to file system, i.e. more points of failure not just SQL connection now.
    • .NET security needs thinking about, check your trust levels to that location.
    • If the single copy gets "damaged" everyone is affected at once.

As always its depends on local factors, such as your infrastructure and how GP is used and what it is used for balancing risk. Also our addins are very heavy now and I just prefer to have them on the local machines.

My add-ins auto update themselves on launch if the addin version has been updated, so negating the need for login scripts or group policy intervention, that may be an approach you can take too.

RE: How to centralize the Add-ins folder in dynamics GP

We had a case several years ago where one of our Addin products was not working on the client's computer. Read here for details http://blogs.msdn.com/b/developingfordynamicsgp/archive/2011/02/04/dynamics-gp-vstools-addins-not-loading.aspx

As noted by Patrick Roth, GP was looking for addin DLLs in the dictionary\Addins sub-folder and not the GP\addins folder. This problem occurred back in GP9 so things may have changed since, but try setting up a dictionary folder on a central folder, create a dictionary sub-folder, modify your DYNAMICS.SET and see what happens.

We have 50+ users and multiple VST customizations. The users access GP on the server through remote desktop. Also, with GP 2015 we are moving almost everyone to web client. This way only one central add-ins folder is used. Otherwise I don't think you have a choice but to write a script to distribute the customizations.

Apologies I've just realised what you mean - I'm not aware of a way to do this.

What are you referring to when you say addins, do you mean report/form customisations?

    Hi jamie

Logon scripts will work.I read some articles on how to use the logon scripts to distribute the customizations around workstations. I'm thinking over it. But still is there a way to keep the add-ins in a single folder in server and make the GP in workstations to access that?? That is what is my actual expectation.

Have you thought about Group Policy or Logon scripts to move the related files to each users workstation?
