how do you change a field name in a GP window?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows and could briefly explain how to change a field name in GP.

For example, when I open the Customer Maintenance window, there are fields such as "Comment 1" and "Comment 2".

I would like to modify that to show "username" and "password".

Thank you,

J

    Jae,

You may want to contact your GP partner for this.

A developer can quickly alter this and role out a new CNK file with these changes.

This is probably the least expensive option unless other customizations are needed.

Not sure if you're using the User Defined Fields in the Customer Card.  If not, you can easily change the field names in Receivables Setup Options window.  Otherwise, a tool called Modifier has to be used to change other than User Defined Fields.  And this doesn't actually change the Field Name on the standard window.  It creates an alternate window that is exactly the same as the standard window with the desired changes applied to it.

You can go into Report Writer and then click on Resources and then Strings. Find the string you want to change and then click Open and change it. This can be tricky because many field names are similar and you do not want your prompts to change on one screen and then mess up a bunch of others. Just back up your dictionary first and if you screw up just restore.

By the way, I did this by choosing the sales core and finding Comment 1 and Comment 2. I just changed the text and voila!!!

So Richard, this method allows you to change Form field names from within Report Writer?

Yes, you are actually changing the underlying text strings in the dictionary. If you have an old RW manual you will find a section on this.

    Hi Richard,

I went into Strings, and couldn't find Comment 1 and Comment 2 listed. I did see Comment1 and Comment2 (without the spaces). I changed these fields, but when I went to the Customers card, it doesnt look like it changed the fields as they still said Comment 1 or Comment 2.

    Any other tips?

It appears on the Customer Maintenance screen that Comment 1 and Comment 2 are static text strings.  You can simply delete them and add your own for Username and Password.

Sorry how do you go about doing that? Report Writer?

Be on the Customer Maintenance screen and then Tools->Customize->Modify Current Window. This will create a new FORMS.DIC file. After making the change you will need to grant use to this new window using Tools->Setup->System->Alternate Forms/Reports.
