Hi,
There are two common ways of creating and managing forecasts in Dynamics CRM.
1. Any open opportunity is part of the "forecast". This is how we operate. Once a lead has been qualified a new opportunity is created and we start tracking that through stages of our sales process. Any open opportunity is visible to the team/management and uses the standard out of box views, charts, etc.
2. In many cases we see companies want to track only those opportunities that a rep is comfortable committing to their pipeline. This is the typical use of Forecast. When this is a need, we add a new field to the opportunity form simply called 'Add to Forecast'. When this field is checked or set to Yes, it will show up in a views/charts that have been edited to include the 'Add to Forecast' field.
Hope this helps!!
