Minimum stock level with alternative products

With 365, if you have alternative products you can set them to be recognized and recommend if you are out of stock through the "sell" settings in part setup.

To keep inventory levels low, is there a way to recognize alternative products when setting min./max. stock levels so that you do not carry inventory of all the alternative versions, but can select the best available/price unit to order in to put in stock?  Then along with that when you run master planning it gives you the list of alternative products and you can select which one to fill?

There is a feature called "Item Substitution" that Microsoft introduces as of 10.0.39, that will help you. In essence it allows the MRP to substitute items based on a priority list.

I mostly deal with Finance now a days, so I'm unable to say if it will have any performance implications. But try it in a test scenario if no-one corrects my assumption.

Edit: I assume you are running D365 Finance and Operations, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management offers functionality to manage alternative products effectively while maintaining optimal inventory levels. Here's how it works:
    1. Alternative Products Setup:
      • You can define alternative products in the product setup under the "Sell" settings. This allows the system to recognize and recommend alternatives when the primary product is out of stock.
    2. Min/Max Stock Levels:
      • While setting minimum and maximum stock levels, you can focus on the primary product and avoid carrying inventory for all alternative versions. The system can suggest replenishment based on availability, price, or other criteria.
    3. Master Planning:
      • During master planning, the system can generate planned orders for alternative products if the primary product is unavailable. You can review the list of alternatives and select the best option to fulfill the demand.
This approach helps optimize inventory management by leveraging alternative products without overstocking.

    Hope this is helpful :)
