Dynamics AX Development - How to Get Started

I am a C# .NET software developer, and I'd like to make the transition to X++ development for Dynamics AX.  Getting started on this path, however, is non-trivial.  In the C# .NET world, the tools are freely available.  There are the free Visual Studio (Community Edition) and VS Code development environments, free Azure accounts for MSDN subscribers and widely available (and also free) training for nearly every development stack.

True, there are evaluation copies of Dynamics AX for existing Customers and Partners - neither of which is me.  It's possible that my employer is a Customer or Partner, but not in my little corner of Boeing, and I have no idea how to go about finding out.

What's a strapping new Dynamics AX dev to do to get going with Dyamics AX?

I'm afraid I don't have any satisfying answer. Dynamics AX has never been publicly available, therefore the story is clearly very different from the .NET world.

It's easy for existing customers and partners; prospective customers can also get an evaluation instance. But that's basically it.

You can get installation and license files for older versions via MSDN subscription, but it doesn't apply to the latest version. It can still be useful for learning certain concepts, but it would make better sense to work on the latest version.

One more option may be through this talent portal, which offers access to demo tools. Unfortunately I don't know how it exactly works for "normal" people ; I didn't have to try it because I'm getting such things through the MVP program.

Ping me later if you don't get any useful answer; I'll try to get some statement from Microsoft.

By the way, I'm checking your blog and you seem to think that AX 2012 is the latest version. It's not the case, there is a newer version called (confusingly) Dynamics AX (without version number), so-called AX 7.

There is no MorphX anymore - all development is in Visual Studio and the client has been replace with web UI, therefore I thought you may not want to worry about MorphX and such stuff at all.

There is still X++ language, but it's now compiled directly to CIL and it got plenty of new features, often very similar to C#. For instance, you can now declare local variables where you want.

In short, I think you would find the latest version more accessible for somebody coming from C# and Visual Studio. Take a look at it.
