Hi,
In the past week we've run into an issue where one of our items cannot be transfered or reclassed to a different location. When we try to post either transaction, we get the popup that says "posting 1 line", but nothing happens for 5+ minutes. Also, while this is trying to post, no one can enter the item ledger.
I checked our item setup and there does not seem to be anything wrong and we were able to post this without issue 6 days ago. Issue has been escalated via our developers to Microsoft but any ideas on how to resolve this?
Hi Hans,
Thanks for the recommendation on the automatic cost adjustment and for answering my question. On topic, we have one lot number for that item and the date was within the same week. We don't currently utilize serial numbers either.
Any other ideas on why it would have so many entries? Could it have to do with our costing setup (ie, could BC be recording a slightly different price for all these units so it requires additional entries)? I've experienced this with other systems where inventory with the same lot/SN required multiple entries when it's been received at different times (ie, receive 10 units on one day and 15 on the next day [both with same lot], will have entries of 10+15 when deducting)
Hi Inge,
Thank you for replying to my question. When we ran the transfer order, the automatic cost posting was and adjustment was the same as it was in my screen shot (posting on, adjustment set to "never". We run BC online.
Hi,I think it's a performance issue caused by customization.
You copy this environment to a new Sandbox, then uninstall this customization, and check if there is still a problem when posting? f the data is the same and there is no problem, you need to ask your partner to optimize your customization.
Hope this helps as well.
Thanks.

I totally agree with Hans here. Switching the way you do cost adjustment and cost posting is usually not a good idea.
If you have a performance issue in BC you should try to find the root cause of it instead of switching cost posting and cost adjustment on and off.
Hi,
coming back on the Disabling of the Automatic Cost Adjustment.
I understand why this route was suggested, but this is not the option you constantly want to en-and disable.
Otherwise... there is nothing much Automatic about is, and you will have to remember running the batch job to recalculate.
On topic: was there anything peculiar about the item posting that could explain the large number of postings?
- Strange date (a date far in the past will kickstart a large number of revaluations)
- Item tracking (lotnumbers? Serial Numbers? The former will generate a large number of additional postings, the latter... a large number per quantity (so if the line qty was 9000, each carrying an individual SN... you could indeed warm yourself (and your coffee mug) for a long run. )
When the posting was running for 10 minutes was the automatic cost posting disabled as well as the automatic cost adjustment disabled?
And are you running Business Central on prem or Business Central online?
Hi ZHU,
First off, thank you for answering my question and for your blog posts. They've been very helpful! You're correct, we do have customization and have automatic cost posting on. I'm starting to think that this is the reason for our system's performance issues.
I was able to complete the transfer order by ensuring everyone was out of the system and letting the transfer order post for 10+ minutes. I investigated the transfer order and it looks like this one order for 9000 pieces created ~1,000 entries... It started to make sense that the process took 10 minutes.
As a followup to the question, do you know why we would have so many entries on one order? Is this due to the Automatic cost posting or another field on the inventory setup, or would you recommend I look elsewhere?
Hi, is there any customization in this environment?
I suspect it's a data issue.
You can disable Automatic Cost Posting on the Inventory Setup page and change Automatic Cost Adjustment to Never, and then try it again.
Hope this helps.
Thanks.
