Install Terminal Services in GP Test Environment

we are thinking of moving our test GP environment to a remote sales office that we have.  the thought is that we can use this test environment in an emergency if our live GP environment was down or unavailable for various reasons.

after doing some reading it looks like terminal services over a vpn is the preferred method to make this happen.  out test environments consists of 2 virtual machines, 1 VM is running SQL and GP the other VM is running an application called Mobiletech(we use for our service dept.). Microsoft recommends to not run terminal services on the SQL machine so I figured I would try running it on the VM that has mobiletech.

if we had to turn the test environment into production because of an emergency only about 8-10 users would need access(probably less)

I Guess what I'm asking is does this seam like a reasonable path?

can terminal services be implemented into an already existing GP environment or will GP have to be setup again after terminal services is running?

any suggestions or criticism is welcome

In our instance we are running a GP client on the terminal service machine rather than a separate instance of GP. So yes it can be implemented into an existing environment.

In the shortcut to GP we also specify the users unique DEX.ini file

what OS is your terminal server machine?

Currently OS = Windows Server 2012 R2 datacentre ,  SQL = 2012 and GP=2015R2.   You can find OS compatibility for your version of GP in customer source.

    Hi Scott,

It is pretty straightforward to install the Terminal Services on 2012R2.. not like the old days.. You can then publish existing apps from the server in the TS management console (Server Manager is actually the central place to do all).

2-3 things you need to be aware.. :

    - I don't recommend using a common DEX.ini file among the various users (as already mentioned by Ian)

    - make sure you have a valid SSL certificate in case your users accessing the published apps thru the -web login access.. (otherwise use Window's remote app access). Without a proper SSL, users are always getting an annoying 'untrusted' web site warning

    - make sure you've  proper TS licensing in place and enabled..

For 8-10 users, an average system configuration should be fine (our TS server has 16GB of RAM, 4-core CPU, runs virtualized on VMWare and serves about 20-25 users).

For the user of personal DEX.ini, read on this blog post :
