Connecting to multiple GP installations - error in versions

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

We have two GP 2015 R2 installations: Production and Test. They were designed to be the same in every respect, but when we attempt to connect to the Test instance we receive the following: "A product installed on your computer is a different version than the database version. " The GP_LoginErrors shows the following:

Product Name: Microsoft Dynamics GP Database Version: 1401016 Client Version: 1401010
Product Name: Microsoft Dynamics GP Database Version: 1401016 Client Version: 1401010

If it is showing a difference exists in both installations, why wouldn't it fail to connect in Production? How can we correct without disrupting our connection in production?

    Hi John

Further to the information that Beat provided if you want to setup your test server with the same version that is on your production server, you will need to uninstall the Dynamics GP client with the later service pack that is on your test system.  Then install the client with the same version as the production server.  You should refresh the databases on the test server with a new copy from the production server.

One last thing you will need to do is to bring any forms and reports dictionaries over from the production server because they update as well when you install a service pack.

    Hi John,

Nope, there is not such thing than 'downgrading' ... :-(

SQL restore is your only option in this case.. As Jeffrey said, someone apparently applied the mid-year tax update to your TEST environment, which at this point means the client that point to this setup needs to be updated too..

As a general rule, I avoid providing users with 2 versions of the client (or pointing to 2 different ODBC connection within the same client) .. too dangerous. Too many things can go wrong.

When setting up a TEST environment, I also activate the RDS service on the server side, than publish a GP client on that RDS server and direct the users to this client to use the TEST environment.. This avoids any conflicts or accidental changes from the user side, since they can't mix up the environment.

BTW - after testing, it appears we cannot "downgrade" the database version on the Test Server once it has been upgraded. Without tearing down the Test environment - too many customizations - our only option is to wait until we can update the Production environment and get them back in synch.

Yeah, it appears someone updated the Test Server without documenting the change. I know we will eventually update to the latest release, but will revert the Test environment first just to verify that this is the solution. Thank you.

RE: Connecting to multiple GP installations - error in versions

    Hi John

    We are making head way.

The version 14.00.1010 was a Year end update released 11/15/2016

the version 14.00.1059 was a mid year update released 6/21/2017

Now I can't track which version is in which of your environments

If your production environment is on 14.00.1010, then uninstall the GP client from your test server and re-install using the same version as the production server.  You may need to use the GP 2015 R2 RTM DVD and then install the  MicrosoftDynamicsGP14-KB3218075-enu.msp service pack.

Also you may want to refresh your test environment databases.

If your production server is on 14.00.1059 then you will need to install the MicrosoftDynamicsGP14-KB4025189-enu.msp service pack to bring the test server install to the same version as the production server.

We also tried completely removing the Client installation from a production workstation and installing from the same media as the Test Server. We included the same 2016 YE Update, but the version did not change.

The Client version on the Test Server is 14.00.1059, which is installed from the DVD image and includes the 2016 YE Update. A Client in Production was installed using the package created from the DVD image, and includes the 2016 YE Update, but it shows as version 14.00.1010.

Made no difference. The Client version still shows as 14.00.1010 (14001010). Any help is certainly welcome.

It looks like the Server version is 14.00.1059, which includes the 2016 mid-year tax update and the Client does not. I will test that theory and post back.

P.S. I did a complete uninstall of the Client on our test Server and re-installed from the DVD image. Now the error is as follows:

Product Name: Microsoft Dynamics GP Database Version: 1401059 Client Version: 1401010

Product Name: Microsoft Dynamics GP Database Version: 1401059 Client Version: 1401010
