D365 User Licencing

Hi!

So I have inherited support for our organisations D365 environment from a former colleague who has left the organisation. We purchase D365 licences through our CSP provider and have the below licence types.

Dynamics 365 - Operational Activity

Dynamics 365 - Team Members

Would anyone be able to advise how I can go about finding out:

1. A high level view on what each of the licence types above do; i.e. what is the difference between an Operational Activity licence and Team Member licence?

2. How I can work out how many licences have been consumed

3. How I assign licences to users?

Thanks!

Karl

Hi KarlG I hope you are doing good!

    1. A high level view on what each of the licence types above do; i.e. what is the difference between an Operational Activity licence and Team Member licence?

Team Members License is divided in two categories, Costumer Engagement and Unified Operations and it is for users who are not tied to a particular function but require read-only access to certain data and basic Dynamics 365 functionality for designated scenarios such as expense entry or updating contacts.

Operational Activity License (known as Dynamics 365 Unified Operations – Activity) is a license intended for additional users who require
more capabilities than the Team Members license, but do not require the use rights of a full user. The additional capabilities are: approve transactional activity, generate or modify items (eg. shipping, vendors) and manage a point of sale.

    More info here.

    2. How I can work out how many licences have been consumed 3. How I assign licences to users?

Here you can find documentation that answers your other two questions. There you will find how to see all licenses that are being used and how to assign licenses to other users. Note: you must have the right privileges to do that.

Thanks for the information and the links.

Looking in our 0365 portal under licences, i can see them there, however no licences have been assigned to any users; they show 0/70 consumed.

The Finance super user person seems to assign roles to users from within system administration inside D365, however I cant seem to work out how many licences have actually been consumed to be able to rationalise them.

So then we have to options:

    1. If you are seeing the following UI and you do not see the licenses displayed, please open a case (ticket) in Microsoft Support.

    2. if you are not seeing the following UI, please look for that into Admin Center -> Billing -> Licenses.

    Hi,

I can see the licences there, however I cant see how they are directly consumed by a user. For example, we are not assigning these licences to users directly, we are simply enabling them in D365.

Is this correct? I would expect if the licence isn’t assigned to the user directly, then it wouldn’t work; in the same vain as assigning a user a E3 licence for other 0365 apps?

    Hi KarlG!

A user can be without license but then when they try to login, they will not be available to do that. If you are seeing a behavior like this, I recommend you open a ticket in Microsoft Dynamics Support dynamics.microsoft.com/.../

If this answers your question, check it as verified.

    Hi Karl,

Today, there is no license enforcement and it is hard to find out what has been really assigned and consumed. Personally, I do expect a license enforcement in the future. The documentation on creating a user is mentioning the step to assign licenses: Create new users - Finance & Operations | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Docs
