Migrating from WMS II to R3 Warehouse and Transportation Management

Hello DAXers.

I have a clinet with very basic warehouse requirements.  Basic inventory liek receiving and cycle counting.  Not much more.  Shipping will be done via legacy system with AX inventory being relieved with an integration.

With that being said, the new R3 WMS features are a bit of overkill.

So I pose the question:  If I were to enable/implement standard WMS  II, how difficult or possible would it be to implement the new WMS (Warehouse and Transportation Mgmt) functionality if the company were to grow or acquire a complex distribution system.

That depends on how you map the new distribution system with the new WMS features.

Can't predict unless you give a specific set of functionalities which you are currently using with WMS II and what set of functionalities you think the company will use when it will grow.

As per my understanding, there is no direct transition path from WMS II to the new Warehouse and Transportation management. Tough I am not sure, let others opine on this.  My view is that it will be almost a new gap fit exercise in future when you want to move to the new WMS features.

Also note then in AX2012 R3 , you cannot enable both WMS II and the new Warehouse and Transportation management. Refer to this nice blog kurthatlevik.wordpress.com/.../ax-2012-r3-do-not-enable-wms-ii-and-the-new-warehouse-and-transportation-management-in-the-same-installation

    Hi,

Rachit is correct. There is no conversion or upgrade tool to convert from WMS II to the new WMS in R3 as the concepts and setup is completely different. Microsoft stated that changing from WMS II to the new would require to have this as a kind of re-implementation.

Note that within a future release of AX the WMS II will be depreciated.

    Hi Twdownie,

To move from WMSII to WHS, the hardest part I have seen is that you need to change the Storage Dimension group of your items. To do that on items with transactions means:

    Adjusting out all inventory

Updating all inventory transactions to Purchased or Sold, or deleting anything responsible for an inventory transaction which you are not able to financially update.

    Perform inventory close.

I think that is quite complex an undertaking.

I would at least think about enabling WHS. You do not have to use the functionality for receiving or counting if you don't want to.
