Down Graded Production Items

Need some advice from the AX Community.  Helping a client set up production in AX 2012 Feature Pack.

Example:

The client manufactures tubes.   Client offers grade A, B, C and D tubes for sale.  During a production run of 100 pc of a Grade A tube, a defect occurs on 4 pieces.  Those 4 pieces can no longer be sold as a Grade A tube.  However the defect allows the tube to be sold as a Grade B tube.  Therefore they acquired 4 pieces of a downgraded item through the production run.  How does one account for those four pieces at the report as finished stage and cost them according to the grade A production run?

Was thinking of using formula and co-products but the downgraded item is not only generated as a co-product but could be ordered as a finished good item as well.   Client does not want duplicate part numbers in the system for co-product and finished good parts.

Has anyone encountered this scenario before and would have a suggestion on how to incorporate?

Thanks in advance for any input.

As far as I have been able to test you cannot generate multiple product configurations via a single production order.

One option could be to use a transfer jouranl after RAF to transfer the product dimentions form A to B on the 4 pieces.  A customization could run this process as an optional step.

I'd set that up as a formula item, with a tracking dimension group that included batch, then create as many batch #'s as needed off the production order for however many grades you have.  Then use a quality order to capture a batch attribute (Grade A, B, C, D, etc), have the CSR's use Batch Reservation logic on the the Sales order, and have an attribute based price model to sell them differently.
