DevOps to be Mandatory for D365 PU37 onwards

Hi Everyone,

Recently I came across a news from one of my colleague that Microsoft is going to deprecate VS 2015 from Azure hosted VMs of D365 FO from PU 37 onwards.

And for that it is going to deallocate existing VMs that are running on VS 2015 and replace it with VM running on Visual Studio 2017.

To execute these steps the all code must be safe in code repository of DevOps and hence configuration of DevOps project has become mandatory.

So my question is, how much truth in this news? Is there any link where Microsoft has announced about this future update?

I am asking this question because at present, a VSTS project is not configured in my DEV environment.

Waiting for your valuable feedback.

Thank you in advance.

    Hi Rhushikesh,

The update is only related to Visual Studio update from 2015 to 2017 version and it's not related to DevOps.

But you need to keep source code in a repository in any case and I recommend you set up DevOps project asap and upload your custom code. Otherwise, you risk losing all your work in case of unexpected issues with VM.

We will not replace anyone's VM. It's on you to replace yours when you can. However, after April if you still haven't replaced it, the monthly updates will fail with an error because you don't have VS2017.

The exact details, as Ludwig mentioned, I've posted in a blog here: community.dynamics.com/.../action-required---net-version-and-visual-studio-2017

That said, your question is worrisome. These Tier1 VMs are NOT BACKED UP. It's not because it's in the cloud that nothing can happen to them. If you're not using source control, you're at risk of losing your code at any time.

PLEASE use source control. It's free and easy.

    Hi Rhushikesh,

Just a small update from my side as you already got the answer. But please, please use Azure DevOps in your project(s). I have seen people struggling by not having the source control setup and they lost their Dev machine. The deployable packages are containing binary compiled coding only. It is not having your source code embedded.

I've seen many people reporting losing all their source code because they didn't use source control.

It's not like AX2012 where you have the source code at least in prod system.

There is no source code in UAT/Prod systems so if your code is only in your devbox, and something happens to that devbox, you have to reimplement everything manually.

I'm sure also your customer wants to you to use source control immediately if you tell these facts to them.

Thank you Nikolaos, Andre, Joris, Sergei, Ludwig. :)

Your all replies are valuable for me and I am well aware of the importance of having DevOps now.

I will configure it on priority basis for my client.

You guys are awesome. Thanks once again.
