How can I get AX2009 to calculate depreciation based on the fiscal period

Hello Everyone

I am using AX2009 and I want the depreciation for the fixed assets to be calculated based on the fiscal period (4/4/5) rather than a calendar month.

I have setup the FA calendar with the appropriate periods.  I have used the method of straight line remaining life with a depreciation convention of None.  In the depreciation profile I have used the financial account period option for both the period and the year.  But no matter what I try I get 1/12 of the annual depreciation.

Any ideas on what I need to do to get the depreciation calculating on the fiscal periods?

Thanks

Hi Elaine, did you manage to solve this problem?. I am facing the same problem as AX proposal seems to be based in period number instead of days within the period.

To get our assets to depreciation on a 4-4-5 schedule we set the Depreciation Year to Fiscal and Period Frequency to Fiscal period in the depreciation profile.  In our fixed asset calendar we defined our year as 52 weeks, instead of 12 months.  Then in our value model we defined the periods to depreciation as the number of years * 52.

    Corey, thanks for the response!

I've been searching for this.  Few questions:

Does the fixed asset calendar used on the value model / books have to be the same fiscal calendar selected in GL > Setup > Ledger?

In your 52 week fiscal calendar, I'm assuming the 'Months' column in the fiscal calendar will be the actual period that it belongs to? i.e. the following 4 weeks belong to period 1.

    1/1/ - 1/7    = month 1

    1/8-1/15      = month 1

    1/16-1/23    = month 1

    1/24 - 1/31  = month 1

Does this work with conventions so that the 'depreciation run date' is populated correctly upon acquisiton?

I set up the calendar for the value models / books under GL > Setup > Periods > Fixed asset calendars.  In AX 2009, the assets do not use the same calendar as your financial periods.

Our calendar is setup similarily to what you showed, where we have 4 periods all designated as month 1, then 4 as month 2, 5 for month 3 and so on.

I don't know if I understand your questions about the depreciation run date, do you have an example?

    Thanks,

Corey, I'm AX 2012.  I tested the setup and overall it works and seem to calculate amounts with minor rounding variance.  However, there are 2 issues:

First, did you get this to work with different conventions without modifications?  For example, Straight Line, Full Month Convention.

No matter when the asset is placed in service, it needs to take the entire depreciation amount for that given period. I found that using 'Full month' convention works with 12 month fiscal calendar because it populates the 'depreciation run date' on the value model to the beginning date of that fiscal period.  'Depreciation run date' determines when depreciation begins.  Therefore, depreciation proposal calculates depreciation from the beginning of the fiscal period, achieving the full month depreciation.

With the 52 week fiscal calendar and using Full Month convention, the 'depreciation run date' is now beginning of the week.

Second, if you're acquiring a 39 year asset, would I need to have the 52 week fiscal calendar setup for 39 years? Some of our fiscal years are actually 53 weeks instead of 52.  It seems that the value model depreciation period is calculated based on the fiscal calendar that are setup.  Is this what you've done?

We didn't try different conventions, we just wanted the assets to start depreciating on a straight line method from the in service date.  I could see there being issues with different conventions, but I haven't tested it.  I do remember that our old fixed asset system also would take depreciation for the full fiscal period when an asset was placed in service, and we decided to let AX start depreciation on the in service date.  But if that won't work, you can mannually change the depreciation run date to be the first day of your fiscal period.

We did not need to set up our calendars way out into the future.  The only downside I've seen so far is you can't run the projections on an asset past the fixed asset periods you have set up.  As long as your asset calendars are defined before running depreciation for those periods, I think you'll be OK.

We also have 53 weeks in some fiscal years.  We decided to make the last fixed asset period in those years to be 14 days so there would still only be 52 periods in the fixed asset calendar, yet the beginning and ending dates for the asset calendar match the fiscal calendar.  We went this route because AX depreciates equally across all fixed asset periods and our CFO wanted assets to depreciate equally every year, regardless of how many weeks there were in the fiscal calendar.

We are running AX 2009, so things may be different in 2012.
