Looking for a way to import field descriptions after the fields have been created?

Posted on by

My entities and fields are created but it's been requested to add field descriptions to many of them. There are a lot of fields to do this so searching for the most efficient way instead of manually going in one-by-one. Any recommendations/suggestions? I am not seeing anything.

Thanks I didn't think of this. I'll see which tool works best and post my solution here.

    Hi,

you might try using the "translations" option, too.. (open your solution in CRM, you'll see Translations Import/Export at the top)

Descriptions can be updated in the translations file, and, then, you can import that file back (although, normally that file has a different purpose - basically, it's a translations file.. so looking for a specific field may be a bit complicated.. you'll probably have to find that field by label, and, then, you'll see the description in the previous line )

I found another tool. Easy Translator in XRMToolBox. Sounds like it may do it. I'll let you know, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

No, that tool wont update the metadata back. That you need to do manually only.

There are other excel addin tool available to add field, but the effort will be more or less same.

You can however save the effort of searching through the field in CRM using metadata export tool

    Thanks,

    Prateek

Thank you. Can this tool be used to import the missing ones back in as well?

You can use XrmToolBox and use metadata export tool. This way you will be able to export the field for all the required entities into a excel.

In excel you can then search for description field and create the missing in CRM.

    Thanks,

    Prateek
