Help changing Field Service product type field

I read that once the Field Service product type field in a product is set - you can't change this. What is the reasoning for this? I Imported over 400 products and there's a handful I'd like to switch from Non-Inventory to Service. I've tried to export to excel - update - import it back up and I still get the error that I'm not allowed to change the field service product type since I set it already.

Error code: 0x80040265, Message: The Field Service product type can't be changed if it was already set to a value.

Can't change it in the product edit form either. Anybody got an idea for a work-around for this?

Thanks
