Access the database of Business Central, read only permissions maybe in ssms

Posted on by 173
We have a client who has 100+ power apps which are currently running on sql as a database. Up until now ,they were using a some legacy ERP system but now they are shifting to Dynamics 365 Business central. They have lots of power automates and stored procedures in sql, which if we try to integrate via api pages in Business central will impact the performance of existing system. Is there any way we can access Business central database ,for read only permissions maybe, so that we can leverage the data without disrupting current architecture

I haven't used these forums much so not sure if the mention will find you properly.

We are building a data warehouse product on BC. For on prem we will take data out of SQL Server directly.
For cloud we have been told there is a "tool in the git repository that does this" but having looked around we didn't find it yet.
As your post says, it requires APIs to be written to get data out of cloud.

So I too am interested to know of any progress / product / tools in this area that will replicate data out of BC Cloud to some target, most likely SQL server of some sort.

    Thanks
    Best Regards

Yes, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central provides several options for accessing its database without impacting performance or disrupting the existing architecture. One approach is to utilize the Data Management Framework (DMF) in Business Central, which allows for data extraction and integration with external systems. You can configure DMF to export data from Business Central tables to a specified location, such as Azure Blob Storage or a file share, where your Power Apps can then access the data without directly querying the Business Central database.

Additionally, Business Central offers web services and APIs that provide read-only access to its data. By leveraging these APIs, you can retrieve the necessary information from Business Central in a controlled and efficient manner, ensuring minimal impact on performance. You can configure permissions and access controls to restrict access to specific data entities, ensuring security and compliance with your organization's policies.

Ultimately, by utilizing these built-in features of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, you can seamlessly integrate your Power Apps with the Business Central database while minimizing disruption to your existing architecture and maintaining optimal performance.

In BC Saas there is no direct database access, and in BC On Prem it should be avoided.
Using the existing APIs or developing new APIs would be the best practise, or simply integrate your BC with Dataverse and run the apps using the Dataverse integration.

    Hi
You cannot directly access the database if you are talking about BC Saas, if we are talking about the ON-Premise version you could although it is not considered good practice.
