Dynamics GP Closes after 3 failed password attempts

Hi there,

I'm very new to Dynamics, so please excuse my ignorance :)

My company just implemented Dynamics GP 2013 and have placed myself, being the Network Admin, in charge of account management. As I have never before had to use Dynamics, I'm trying to work my way through some minor issues I've found.

I'm trying to find a way to not have the GP client close after 3 failed password attempts. Our current sec policy locks users out after 4 and this is causing some confusion among our staff, and giving my help desk guy a terrible headache lol. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Altaf

    The best way to not have GP close after 3 failed attempts is to make sure users know their passwords.

    The domain password policies apply to Microsoft Dynamics GP users. Check the link below for further details;

    Frequently asked questions about the advanced SQL Server options in the User Setup window in Microsoft Dynamics GP

    Hope this helps,

    @Richard, I agree, however, the users in accounting RARELY remember anything.

    @Mahmoud, I read that post earlier, however, I'm noticing users are still getting 4 attempts before being locked out but the client still closes after 3 failed attempts. Just a heads up, the consulting company that installed Dynamics used SQL accounts as opposed to domain accounts for logging into GP.

    We use GP 10 and the Advanced SQL Server Options is not ticked for that same reason. If it is ticked after 3 attempts it will lock you out because it is using SQL rules.

    Otherwise, it will just close the window.

    GP uses SQL Server authentication. However, all GP users must be setup in GP and then GP will create the users in SQL. To my knowledge there is no way to change the three strikes and your are out login policy.

    I have once used the Dex.ini settings to change the number of tries a user could go through before the GP Application closes.

    Go to Microsoft Dynamics GP Folder > Data > Dex.ini

    SQLNumLoginTries = number ( The maximum number of login attempts allowed before GP exits. The default is three. Use negative one (-1) for an unlimited number of tries.)

    Check out the following reference;

    Dex.ini Settings

    You need to take into consideration that the Dex.ini settings applies to the same workstation only and doesn't populate on other workstations. This file is used when the GP Application launches, through which you could control certain settings.

    Although, I would find it more applicable to enforce the "three times" login attempts, warning users is a good method. Check the following reference which might be helpful in general

    Warning the user if Caps Lock is on during login

    Hope this works out for you,

    Here is my experience with this issue.  Once the user gets kicked out after maxing out the attempts, No matter how carefully the password is entered the next time, the login fails.  The resolution was to reset the password for the user and request them to be careful next time while typing the password.   Is there any logic to this - not sure, does it work -  yes every time.

    Cheers!

    The 3 password attempt has been in place with GP for a long time.  I assign the user their first PW and tell them to change it to what ever they will remember.  But I do hold them accountable after several resets.

    It's any 3 of 4 - Upper Case, Lower Case, Number, or Symbol.  There's a minimum & maximum length, but most of my staff use their own name, nick name, kid's name, pet's name.

    Hi,

    I've added that switch to the Dex.ini on my local computer. For some reason, I'm still kicked out after three tries. Any idea why this is occurring?

    Thanks

    First, check the posts from Mahmoud M. AlSaadi above to determine your password policy. The other thing I've found is that there was a duplicate entry in the .ini file. Also check to make sure you haven't misspelled anything. Does it always kick you out after 3 tries?
