System Password Issue

Hi

I'm an instructor using GP in the classroom.  We're experiencing an issue with our system PW.  In the past we logged in as the sa using the system PW and then could do administrative tasks like reset user PW or set up accounts.  All of a sudden we can sign in as the sa using what we believe t be the system PW and cannot perform any administrative tasks.  A screen will pop up asking for the system PW and what we think is the system PW doesn't work.

I've searched this site and found some possible answers to this regarding lost system PW that might help.

We'd like to know what could be wrong or what could have happened and what we might do about it or what thebest course of action is.

I understand answering this could cause a security issue so I would understand if you need validation of who we are or need to be careful with your answer.  We are a bit stumped though and would appreciate any help anyone could give.  I have 5 classes finishing GP projects which appear to be OK unless the student forgets their PW in which case we cannot reset it.

Thanks

-Rick

    Thanks Rich

Yes its the GP system password.  We have two GP system administrator log-ins one has sa as and ID and the other has DYNSA.  The first is only used by myself and one of the college's system administrators.  The second was distributed support techs in our student computing centers so they could reset passwords.  We have a part time instructor who has it too.  I thought the DYNSA didn't have as much capability as the sa one, but now I believe that might not be so.

If you can change the system password and not change the log-in password for the administrator's IDs and in addition the DYNSA log-in can be used to reset the system PW then I could see someone resetting the system password probably by accident.  The part timer could have easily done it thinking he was resetting the generic first log in password for students.

I passed the link you posted on to my IT support and I'm trying hard to get hold of the part timer.

    Thanks again

    -Rick

Sound like you are resetting the pw for the student and then the pw is no longer working.  One of the issues is that it also records the DSN of the machine that is being used to reset the pw.  Your best would be to reset the pw but do a change pw with login.  Then the user is on their machine and when they change the pw it pulls the machines correct identity.

Or do connect to the machine that the pw needs to be changed on (if you have citrix or Terminal Server) and then go to the pw window and have the user do the pw change.

You need to open a support case for this. Running the update script is not support and can cause issues.

No you couldn't Richard. That password is encrypted which is why we have a tool to decrypt passwords. You can go through any type of process you like I am only stating that from the technical support side I have seen many issues when people do this from the back end. Including running the script to so called 'blank' out the password.

Here is the way to "fix" it.

    1) Microsoft Dynamics > Maintenance > Sql

    2) Besure to have DYNAMICS DB selected and product Microsoft Dynamics GP as the product.

    3) Scroll down in the window until you see System Password Master and selected it.

    4) Mark Drop Table and Mark Create Table.   (this effectively deletes the table and the recreates it with a blank password).

    5) Hit the Process Button.

    6) Go into Sql Mgmt and go to the Dynamics DB.   Look for SY02400 table.   Open it with Edit Rows.

    7) In the DMYPWDID, type a 1 and tab through the other two columns.    The PASSWORD column should show <Binary data> and the DEX_ROW_ID column with show a number that is auto populated as you tab through it (probably will show a 1).

You have now just reset the system password to a blank.
