Is it worth learning GP

Hello all. I am an owner/sole employee of a PC break/fix shop in southern Illinois. This is how I ended up here:

I started trolling around trying to find information for a potential client who is apparently running Great Plains 9.0 software without any administrator. They also are a small shop, under 30 employees, with most of the office area being controlled for years by a comptroller type who had to step down due to health issues. They have a new (under six months) office manager and a new accountant in the office, trying to figure out everything that was lost in the shuffle. My contact is actually their service shop manager, who was hired 4 months ago and along with the office manager report directly to the owner. My contact heard I was working small business and asked if I could come over and see if I could figure out the LARGE number of glitches they are having with GP, without them having to pay $150USD/hour for support. My questions are:

Is it worth investing in whatever training is available thru the Customer Support thing?

How do I go about getting into the program?

Does every shop that buys GP have access to the pay support things for a certain period of time, since I am willing to bet they never signed up for it?

Oh, and does anyone in the St Louis area have any idea at the going rate to charge for this kind of service?

Thank you all in advance for any information you can share.

    Here is my $0.02...

$150/hour sounds like pricing from a couple of years ago.  Most people I talk to now charge $165+ /hour, so $150/hr is not outragous.  I understand where the company is coming from, not wanting to pay that kind of money for support (altought it is hard for me to believe they were not aware of the cost up front).  However, the fact of the matter is, they are running an enterprise grade ERP system that is going to cost enterprise grade support dollars.

Regarding the Customer Source support, you need to know if they have a maintenance contract with Microsoft or not.  I would highly doubt ANYONE would spend the money on an ERP and not pay the maintenance.  If they do have a current maintenance agreement then they may already have support.  If not, they can purchase blocks of 5 support cases for around $600 or so.  When there maintenance contract is ready for renewal, they can choose to pay 18% of their software's list price for 5 more support cases a year with 3 hour garunteed response time.  For 25% of the list price, they can get unlimited support with a garunteed 1 hour response time from Microsoft.  I highly recommend the last option, if they are not wanting to pay $150+/hr (it is what we use).

Is it worth your time learning?  It is completely up to you, but to learn GP for only 1 customer who does not want to pay $150/hr, I would say no.  I have spent a little over 2 years in GP now as the head systems administrator and I must say I still have quite a lot to learn.  To really support GP, you have to have a knowledge of not only the database/IT side, but accounting, and general operational knowledge of the business as well.  I rely on Microsoft support for most of our issues that I can't figure out.  They are really quite good.  Now, if you are looking to get into the GP consulting and support business for more than just 1 customer then sure...go ahead and start to learn.  I will leave it to some of the other consultants that work this board to give you some tips on getting started.

I am curious as to why your customer didn't know the support costs up front before investing into a product like Dynamics GP.  This is not a software you buy out of the box and it just works like Microsoft Office.  There had to be some time planning and implementing.  Were they not aware of the support costs during that?

Again, this is just my $0.02 but I think your customer may need to do some evaluation on the mindset they have of their software.

    Answers to your questions:

    > Is it worth investing?

There is a vast amount of knowledge required to support GP and it helps to be an accountant who actually understands the front end of the ERP application.  Unless you are planning on becoming a Business Partner with Microsoft and obtaining the required certifications, this is really not going to be worth your time.  However, you can partner with another company that is certified and work out a beneficial relationship with that partner.

    > Does every shop that buys GP have access to the pay support things for a certain period of time, since I am willing to bet they never signed up for it?

There are annual support contracts that include upgrades/updates/service packs only and access to the Customer Source site or that include a certain number of support cases and the other things already mentioned.  There must be a partner of record (Business Partner) for these to be run through.  Again – partnering with one would be a good idea.

    > Does anyone in the St Louis area have any idea at the going rate to charge for this kind of service?

The $150 the client mentioned would be a fair rate for the service.  Since there are so many certification requirements, amount of specialized knowledge required, annual fees to pay, and accounting personnel involved, this is a very nominal rate for the service being provided.  There could be an arrangement worked out with the customer whereby they pay for a certain number of hours for a period of time and get a discounted rate but otherwise they should expect to pay at LEAST $150 for qualified, respectable service in this area.

Kevin, as the other two folks pointed out, it takes years of experience to learn GP well enough to provide expert support.  It would not be worth your time to learn the application unless you wanted to become a full time GP consultant.  As Ron and John said, it's best to begin with a pretty strong accounting background before even considering such a direction.

It would be best to help them find a really good consultant who can provide support to them.  The $150/hour is a reasonable rate.

    Hope this helps,

If you are not going to charge the proper rate for your time is it not worth investing.  GP is a large and good application but you need to know it well to help someone, especially if they are having many problems using it.  I would guess their problems come from a lack of user knowledge.

There are two avenues for you and I suggest both.

We have a collection of manuals written to help firms like you and your client understand and use GP.  Get copies!  You can order them from our web site ( www.AccoladePublications.com )

Find a local GP partner and have your client engage them for the GP.  You can keep the system and other software business that is your specialty and your client will love YOU more for putting them in contact with a good GP vendor.  If you can't find one, call me (321-277-1341) and I will recommend several for you.

No offense intended Mariano.  I include you in the group that has strong accounting background even though you're just a technical guy!  LOL

One nice thing about supporting a platform like GP is that if you don't have the accounting experience...you are going to get it...or find another profession :)

I second the "no offense".  You seem to have a great blend of the technical and accounting aspects Mariano!

Thank you all for your insightful replies, as well as a number of emails offering support of one kind or another. I do actually have a slight background in accounting as well as my IS, but I am seeing from this thread that GP might be a bit over my head. I have yet to approach the potential client, so any additional input is appreciated.

A complex ERP solution like GP requires intimate knowledge of the application that can be gained only through years of using and/or supporting it.  Help your client find a GREAT consultant/consulting firm with a proven track record and preferably a number of GP certifications.  Advise them to pay the prevailing rate.  It will cost them much less in the long run than hiring someone 'on the cheap'.  Consultants who don't have the requisite knowledge/experience can cause more harm than good.  I had a client that paid $125k to have their data cleaned up after a botched GP implementation by a group that didn't know what they were doing.

I forgot one question. Is GP sold in modules? or is it one complete package, with the modules being designed by each administrator?
