MRP usability in a quick turn manufacturing environment

We ahve been tryign to run MRP and are ahving terrible luck.

Many of our parts have various lead times, this can be set in MRP. However we do not have set order periods nor do we have a forcast. Normally a customer will contact us for x items, if we have enough to make the order we build that quantity. More often than not we rely on vendor realtionships to ensure job are turend as quick as possible. Having stated this, waht value does MRP offer us? Our partner sold us something that does not appear to even benefit us. Having purchasing and our scheduler ride herd on the system 8 hours a day seems foolish considering  we spent over 300k for a system that is not up to par.

Does anyone have suggestions or resources?

Are you a custom shop?  If not, you could put Order Pt's on the FG items.   If a custom, do you have any standard parts or sub-assemblies you could plan for?   Frank is right.   You have to have something from which MRP can use to plan from.   Can be a sales quote if you do not own forecasting.   You can also create a planning BOM where you create a ficticious item number and then put the FG as 'components'.   Put the planning BOM item on a sales quote or order and then use that to drive MRP.   Be cognizant of the dates as MRP is very date specific.

    manelson,

Without a forecast or dummy sales orders in the system to create demand, you're right, MRP won't do much for you except tell you that you don't have the inventory needed to manufacture to customer requirements after sales orders are entered.

First question - what would you like MRP (or alternatively, some other planning tool) to do for you?
