Inventory Dimension Link

All,

I am using AX 2012 R3 CU8

If you go into inventory management > Setup > Posting > Dimension Link

A form pops up for associating a dimension link to the site storage dimension.

We have several Sites and each Site has a warehouse associated to it.

For instance Site1 will have a Warehouse1, Site2 will have  a Warehouse2

There is little documentation on this form so I was hoping some folks in the forum actually use it and can provide feedback. Thanks.

Does anyone use the dimension link?

What is it's significance?

    RE: Inventory Dimension Link

    Hi Keith,

First - I put my hands up and admit I've never heard of it, let alone used it. So great find!

But it seems clear what it is for. If you want 'Site' to be a financial dimension, you could create it as one, but there would be no way for AX to know that your financial dimension called 'Site' was meant to mirror the inventory dimension called 'Site'. It would just be like any other financial dimension to AX.

With the 'Dimension link' form, you can setup AX so that the value that you enter for the inventory site is automatically the value used in the financial dimension 'Site'. In this way, for example, financial transactions related to sales would all be stamped with the site from which they were sold.

Thanks Guy. I appreciate you taking the time to answer. With that said if it is enabled is there any harm that can be done? How could I review the action taking place once transactions are in effect?

Based on what your writing here and my understanding of financial dimensions it would be a good thing.

If you enable it, it would be like someone putting the inventory site that is selected on the order (or journal, or whatever) as the value in your 'Site' financial dimension. I can't say whether you'd think that was harmful, since I don't really know what you want to use it for!

I suggest you could enable it in a test environment, and look at the effect on postings made by vouchers on documents that are related to inventory (like purchase orders, sales orders etc.)
