AX 2012 R2 image - AOS service stuck in "starting" status

Hi I've downloaded the latest R2 image from PartnerSource and am using VirtualBox to host the image.  I'm use to having to start/restart the AOS service on previous images, but for this one it doesn't seem possible.  The AOS service seems to be stuck in "starting" status.  I've tried stopping/starting/etc directly in a cmd prompt with no luck "Service could not be controlled in it's current state" or the "The service is starting or stopping.  Please try again later."

I've reviewed prior posts on this topic (https://community.dynamics.com/ax/f/33/t/105778.aspx) but wasn't able to resolve this issue.

Any help is appreciated.

any info in the windows event log? what kind of hardware are you using.

the first time it Always take a lot of time?

an other thing, does the image have internet connection?  otherwise a lot of DNS time out

    Thanks for the quick reply:

    * event log - every minute or so Microsoft Dynamics AX Enterprise Portal has an error - "Dynamics Adapter Logon failed" but nothing relating to AX directly or AOS

    * hardware - hosting the image on VirtualBox - running 4 MB base memory and 4 processors.  Dell Latitude E5430 laptop with an i7 processor and 8GB of RAM (running other images like AX2012-A not a problem)

    * yes first time could take a while but it's been hours...

    * yes the image has internet connection

Also I've confirmed that SQL is up and running, I can navigate around in SQL Management Studio without a problem.

    Thanks for your help

After they have changed the image to Windows Server 2012 many of us have struggled with issues, if you use Virtual Box. Many of those issues relate to the need for a bridged network connection. Palle Agermark has written about this on his blog: www.agermark.com/.../setup-march-2012-demo-machine-for.html.

This may be helpful - it is worth a try...

Thanks Henrik.  That didn't resolve my issue but probably proactively resolved the next issue :)

I've figured out how to kill the hung service for anyone who's interested (and for the non-technical folks like me):

    cmd prompt

    - sc queryex <servicename> (note the PID)

    - taskkill /f /pid <PID>

this will stop the hung service

Now when I try to manually start the AOS, it times out and reverts back to the hung status.  I've tried logging the service on using a local system account rather than the contoso\administrator credentials - same effect, hung service.

Now it seems that the real issue is the inability to get the AOS started.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance :)

I think I've resolved this issue.

Try starting the service at the command prompt - net start AOS60$01

That seemed to do the trick for me.  Thanks Dick and Henrik
