Dexterity

Posted on by 175

I was told that one could see GP code if they had a dexterity license. I am trying to see what processes are performed behind the scenes for various GP processes--in particular what database tables are being touched. Again, I was told that dexterity shows this for all processes. Can someone confirm this before we pay whatever the license fee is? If this is not the case what alternative do I have? The SDK does not give the complete picture. There are way too many stored procedures and triggers to sift through on my own. eConnect doesn't give this vantage point. And I cannot open a help desk ticket with MS directly for every instance. Also I do not want to open help desk tickets for these things as it takes too long. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Understood, we all started at that stage!!..Dexterity in itself isn't that hard, If you have any programming skills (VB etc.), you will probably pick it up fairly easily, there are just a few tricks etc. that come with experience that make life easier.

When you have specific requirements or are starting a project, post again.

    Best regards and good luck!

Thanks. You have confirmed what I have already been told and that is exactly what I need to know. As far as learning Dexterity goes you have confirmed that as well--that is is difficult etc. But I do not want to alter the code and therefore do not need to become intimately familiar with it. I just need to look at it. As far as what I need to know . . . this has been and will be an ongoing need of my given what I am tasked to do. It is not one thing or the other. It is just a constant need to understand these processes to help my company customize GP and in particular automate it as they demand.

    Re: Dexterity

With dexterity you could certainly open the dynamics dictionary and see what resources (Tables etc) are associated with what forms, but if you want to view the source code, you need to buy it. I don't think it is available to customers, just partners who are in the source code program. Thereare afew things you can do to see what is happening when you post a transaction for example - such as SQL traces etc. The learning curve for dexterity is steep, and experience counts for an awful lot.

For what reason do you need to see the source code or understand exactly what is happening in the system? There are resources that allow you to talk to GP - eConnect for example - without having to alter the code. Also altered code can make upgrades a bit of a nightmare. We are 15 year with GP and have never had to alter source code, and we have completed some large developmets in dexterity (especially integrations before eConnect was a viable alternative).

Let us know what you need to do, and we might be able to advise better.

Also in relation to logging calls with MS - this site is free, and you get answers from people doing this kid of thing every day with argueably just as much experience, (and in some cases more), and certainly a store of tips and tricks and knowledge of the 'gotchas' to watch out for.

    Best regards,
