Ax 2012 -Multiple instances

Hi All ,

I was going through the https://community.dynamics.com/ax/f/33/t/168951 and did not understand why required multiple instances in Ax 2012 .

In earlier versions need to have the multiple instances to enable the country/region-specific features , but in Ax 2012 Country/region-specific features are now enabled for each legal entity instead of for each instance of Microsoft Dynamics AX. This means that a single instance can have a legal entity specific functionality.

Then still we need to go with multiple instances and what is the importance to have it , if we do not want to the multiple instances what could be problem .?

Assume that need to implement Ax 2012 R3 in 12 counties like USA , IND, JAP , CH , Sing..

in this case is it mandatory to have the multiple instances ?

Please let me know the pros and cons of multiple instances in Ax 2012 R2 .

You really got the answer to this when you asked it 9 months ago :-)

There will be downtime, how do you handle this in an instance worldwide with 24/7 requirements? Multi-setup, legal aspects, process and customization differences, etc. This is not advocating multiple instances, but you need to understand the customers business, what they want and what they will be doing to be able to advise on the number of instances.

Thanks Steven for pointing the post .

My bad i really forgot the post and the answer .

I have one question when it comes to multiple instances as you said that assume that we 3 instances one for US , second for Europe and another for East Asia for Ax 2012 R2 .

In this case do we need to maintain one database or 3 databases ,if client is using Ax 2012 R2 ?

Assume that client using one database for all countries , but 3 instances as said above , in that case how data (master data& transaction data ) will move to another instances in Ax 2012 R2 ?

Does system has any option to sync live master & transaction data between these instances ?

If you have a single database for all countries, then it's a single environment and not three instances.

    Thanks Martin ,

Assume that we need to implement the Ax to almost 15 countries , in that case what you suggest to have the one database or multiple databases , if client is using Ax 2012 R3 .

what about pros and cons if we use the single database or multiple database ?

Back to your earlier post, if you are going to have 3 instances (US, Europe, Asia), then you *will* be using 3 databases. There is not an option to run separate instances using same database.

And due to performance concern you will probably put the 3 databases somewhere close to the region they serve. So you will need 3 database servers.

(Small tech note: 1 database server can host one or more databases)

    Thanks Dominic for reply,

You brought the correct point that due to performance issue might be go with 3 seperate databases .

In that case , Assume that Singapore company is sister company of USA and do the inter company trade ( SO /PO ) between two companies.

If we have the seperate databases region wise  how to handle the inter company trade scenarios like automatic PO / SO creation and posting the packing slip and invoices.

    Thanks in advance.

You cannot do inter-company across instances as standard.

The pro's and con's are still the same as in the other post; downtime, functionality, process differences, costs.

As a solution architect you need to understand the customers business, how they process, what they require, then sit with them and design the outline of what is needed - they need to be involved and own it.

    Thanks Steven for the reply,

If i go with one instance ( one database ) for all countries ,can do inter company transactions but as dominic said that will have huge performance issue.

If i go with region wise 3 instances ( 3 databases) for all counties , no performance issues , but can not go with inter company transactions .

What is your suggestion being experienced person and share your thoughts on this ?

If you want a single environment, the usually approach it that people from remote locations connect through remote desktop and run AX client somewhere close to the AOS and database. It's not a "huge" issue.

Another alternative approach is database replication (but I've personally never used it for this scenario).

Any answer I give will potentially be wrong as we have so little information.

Simple question is, what is the full intercompany chain relationship, country and company to country and company? Then you can decide part of the solution but then you need to consider maintenance windows and process differences, legal requirements (say China) and any other elements.
