What is the purpose of Source type in Sales and Marketing

Please can someone give me insight into what the purpose is of the Sales management > Source type in Sales and Marketing.

I can see that you can set this on Leads and Opportunities, and can infer that this describes where a lead or opportunity originated from, but is this then used later as a filter on specific reports?

What are the Source type option on the same form? What would be an example of an 'Option' on a Source type?

I have searched for more information on this form but I haven't been successful in finding anything.

Hi Liese-Marie Heyns,

You have rightly understood the source type form use.

I can recall to use it for one of my clients and below is the explanation for the same.

Source type is the form where you can set values for the lead and opportunity origin e.g trade shows and advertisements just to name few.

Now lets make trade show as a value in source type.

Now as you can see I have made trade shows as a source and options are the individual trade shows like Shanghai Expo and New York Trade meet.

Also note that "Allow free form text on record" is checked" (Will see it working below)

Now I am in Singapore Trade show and got a lead Stefani and I make a record for the same but the Source option for Singapore trade is not setup

So I can type in the name of the trade show instead of selecting from drop down.

If the "Allow free form text on record" was unchecked I would not have been able to type in new values which were not present in the master.

This also updates the source option in the source type master.

So you can make source types which represent the origin of the lead and options as the sub category for source type.

Similarly for advertisement as a source type options will be Hoarding, TV commercial, FM commercial and so on.

This is best I can recall for now.
