GP 10 Field Level Security - Working Sporadically

I am trying to restrict some fields and buttons on the SOP Window and it seems to be working for some fields and not others.

Example - I started with Locking fields (from Line scroll) Quantity Ordered, Unit Price, Extended Price, the Delete Row Button, Unit Cost and the Blue Expansion Button for Item Detail.  From the Main Window, the Actions Button.

The only ones that are working from Line Scroll are Quantity Ordered  Unit Price and the Expansion Button.  It works great.  However, nothing is being restriced in the Extended Price, which makes locking the Unit Price useless because they can change that from Extended Price.  The Actions Button in the main screen is working too (meaning is is disabled).

I even opened Modifier and verified the field numbers of the forms (Unit Price is actually the (L) Unit Price, which I thought was a label).  Every one of them is correct.  But some just don't work.

Is there any explanation to this?  Do some fields just not work?  I tried to restrict the Item Number and GP specifically said that since it's a required field, it will not work.  I get that.  But what about the other random ones.

I prefer not to do this by vba code unless absolutely necessary.  Can someone verify that Field Level Security is buggy and doesn't work very well?  There seems to be a void of knowledge between Customersource and Google.  I can't find more than basic information.

Thanks, Kevin

Re: GP 10 Field Level Security - Working Sporadically

Well, I was able to take care of most of my needs on the SOP window using Field Level Security and the "Hide" option.  The "Lock" or "Disable" Options worked sporadically.  A field may be disabled on loading, but then clicking on another field automatically re-enables other fields.  But then I got to the "Sales Item Detail" window and half of my fields didn't work, even hiding them (price and cost ones in particular).  They still showed up.  I had so spend far too much time trying to figure out if I wasn't doing something right or if it just was not working.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to resort to VBA code to do what I want.  A couple lines of code will lock all of the fields I want to lock with no hassles.

In my opinion, Field Level Security seem to me to be great in theory, but not great in practice.  The advantage I was looking for was that the code is at the database level instead of the client level, so I didn't have to worry about deploying code to all clients.  Plus, making one new Field Level Security ID for every field is tiresome.  When I have to disable a majority of the fields for a user class, I have to make about 50 individual ID's.  I wish you could group a bunch of them into one ID and just assign that one.

Thanks for looking into it.  Does that mean that in your above screenshot, you did not get the delete row to work? I tried a bunch of the modes on all of them (password, disable, lock).  I would have thought that Password would have at least triggered some action, but it didn't which makes me think it's just ignoring the field.

It is strange that you got the Extended Price to work but I couldn't.  I also used the (L) Extended price after looking it up in Modifier.

Just a thought, the window has been modified and does have some vba code, but it is only a button that launches internet explorer and goes to SSRS for a custom Sales Order / Invoice.  Would that be what the message "existing code in products" means?

    Well,

It's not buggy, but according to the developer,  "Some security modes may not work depending on existing code in products". I did not try other modes, but that would be my next step.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

    Hi Kevin,

I have found the Field Level Security module to be solid and one of the best tools out there to avoid customizations.  I wish more people would exploit it's capabilities. Let me go through your list and see what I can find.

The first one I tried was Extended Price. The field is actually (L) Extended Price and it worked for me.  None of the fields with an (L) in front of them are prompts.  The (L) means it is a local field that lives on the form only.

I'll try the others and report back

    Kind regards,

    Leslie
