Inplace-Upgrade CRM 2013 to 2015 fails with “The User Id is invalid”

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I'm trying to Upgrade a Dynamics CRM 2013 SP1 to Version 2015. All prerequisite checks are passing but during the setup this error occurs (German system):

Error Screenshot

The server is part of an AD. Here is the error-part of the log file:

19:03:24| Error| System.Exception: Fehler bei der Aktion Microsoft.Crm.Tools.Admin.PopulateDefaultSysAdminFieldSecurityProfile. ---> Microsoft.Crm.CrmException: The user Id is invalid.
   bei Microsoft.Crm.BusinessEntities.SecurityLibrary.GetPrivilegedUserCallerAndBusinessGuidsFromThread(WindowsIdentity identity, IOrganizationContext context)
bei Microsoft.Crm.BusinessEntities.SecurityLibrary.GetCallerAndBusinessGuidsFromThread(WindowsIdentity identity, Guid organizationId, LocatorServiceContext locatorServiceContext)
   bei Microsoft.Crm.Setup.Server.Utility.NewOrgUtility.GetCurrentUserId(Guid organizationId)
   bei Microsoft.Crm.Setup.Server.Utility.NewOrgUtility.PopulateDefaultSysAdminFieldSecurityProfile(Guid organizationId)
   bei Microsoft.Crm.Tools.Admin.PopulateDefaultSysAdminFieldSecurityProfile.Do(IDictionary parameters)
bei Microsoft.Crm.Setup.Shared.CrmAction.ExecuteAction(CrmAction action, IDictionary parameters, Boolean undo)
--- Ende der internen Ausnahmestapelüberwachung ---, Error, RetryCancel, Option1

I already added the computer account of the CRM Server machine to all AD security groups as it is adviced at many links I found. The server system ist Windows Server 2012 R2.

There are some obscure hints about language packs and machine sizing about this but nothing seems to fit to my Scenario.

Thanks for your help

If you are using named service accounts for the CRM services, try changing their user account to Network Service for the duration of the upgrade and then setting it back after the upgrade completes.
