Cannot change inventory unit

Hi everyone,

I forgot to put the inventory unit in AX2012, but  cannot change. The error says like this :

"The inventory unit for item XXX cannot be changed because activated cost prices exist. The cost prices can only be deleted by deleting the item."

Does it really we have to delete the items? what if we really need to change it and the transactions already exist. We can't delete items while there are transactions already, right.

thanks,

Ton

Where you have transactions and need to alter it you do indeed have to recreate the item, where it cannot be deleted you need to rename it then transfer the stock to the new item.

    Hi Weaveriski,

Thanks. Is this the best practice of it ?

I know it's shutting the door after the horse has bolted but you are aware that there is a default Unit on the Inventory parameters which is applied to all new items? - so you don't get this again. Alos in this case I'd be tempted to try the 'Fill' command. It has a handy little featue that it by-passes most validation checks.

This is the best practice advocated by Microsoft.

Tims suggestion of the default is good, but you can guarantee the one that is wrong is where it populates the default and then you realise it should have been something else.

The fill utility is interesting, but on every sales and purchase order the system holds the quantity back as a stocking unit, so if you do this you still need to remove every transaction and stock, do not just do it :-)

    Sorry guys,

I really am new about AX 2012, what is "Fill" Utility ? :)

    Thanks in advance,

The Fill utility has to be enabled by a configuration key (It's right near the top of the configuration tree). Once it's active, for main tables you can Right-click > Record info on a field (not a key) and you should see a 'Fill' button. Don't try it in PROD/LIVE unless you're really sure you know what you're doing, but it is handy for setting up data before go live, and for correcting errors (sometimes).

I have the same situation as Tony, but we don't have any transactions yet, as we are just setting up the system. Is there not any way to change the stock unit and the cost price together, when we have already set up a unit conversion for those units? I was shocked to find that you cannot even change an item without any transactions.

    Hi Mikko

This is a resolved question from 5 years ago!

Change the cost price and change the stock unit on the released product is not an issue when you have not transacted - what is it telling you when you are trying to do this? I would suggest writing a new post with your own details, Tony has his answers, he verified the post.

    Thank you.

I have no transactions, but still ax gives me exactly the same error message that Tony had, when there are activated prices, so that's why I thought to reply to this same post. Sorry for not checking the dates. I will start a new thread for this.

:-) Same message because an activated cost price is a transaction. See what you get from a clean post, more people will see it, but as stadnard this is now locked down, set the inventory parameter default as Tim says for the future.
