Importing Products into a Product Family

I am trying to import products into a family.  I manually created a sample product and added it to a family and then exported the data.  The only fields that seem to be different, are the "hierarchy path" and "parent" fields. So, I have set these fields to the same value as the exported sample product.  However, when I try and import a test part, it is created successfully, but ignores theses fields.  Does anyone have an idea why?

Thanks in advance

    Rob,

Maybe you can try using non standard one but use the Configuration Migration Too?

This is an amazingly s#@#$$ problem, or better say  BUUUUG. The import template that is built into the Dynamics CRM ignores the Parent field completely.

The only workaround i found was to copy the content of the CRM Product Template to Another excel file, then Save it as CSV, and import it. you'll be prompted to map the fields, at which step on the Parent(Lookup) field setting, you should remove all the selections, except NAME. See the snapshot below. Now when you import it, the parentage or hierarchy is imported also. SCORE!!!!

    Michael,

Yes, that works perfectly for new products but not for existing ones (of which I have 15,000).  I have spoken to Microsoft about this and this is a know issue that is going to be resolved in Update Rollup 1.2.  Luckily my system isn't live yet, so my thoughts was as follows:-

    1. Export my existing products, and paste into the template with the addition of the parent field.
    2. Delete my products
    3. Import them back in

Michael - What rollup are they fixing this issue on?  I am on 2016 -Update 1 (online) and still cannot change the family hierarchy for existing live products.

    Thanks!

In the same boat here. It would help tremendously to be able to perform a simple OOB task to get the products in with the appropriate product families.

The steps suggested below don't work for me... I can't believe this is STILL not working, it's such a basic functionality... I'm speechless.

Below helped me ONCE but now it fails again.

Please follow instruction how to fix the issue:

Login CRM 365 > Settings > Customizations > Customize the System

Entities > Product > Fields >  Click on Name to sort in A B C order > double click field “ parentproductid ” for entity “ Product ”

Change the “description” text to a new value: new hierarchy.  > Save and Close > Publish All Customizations

Open Field “ parentproductid ” for entity “Product” one more time to change the “description” text to original value: Specifies the parent product family hierarchy

     > Save and Close > Publish All Customizations.

After all steps have done. Please import with Excel file one more time (Parent record should be present so Hierarchy Value is existed before new record is imported )

Let me know how it goes as I have tested it works successfully on my trail instance.

I've tried this and I'm still left with a partial import, not bringing in the parent. If there is no way to import products with a parent, the only option that I can see is to create each product manually. Has anyone had any success?

RE: Importing Products into a Product Family

I took my master Excel doc normalized table of products, exported to Sharepoint list.  I did it as a 2 step process.  I created a flow to get the internal IDs of all my parent items (used D365 List Records action on my products list in Flow) then updated my spreadsheet with the D365 Parent internal IDs and used flow to loop through and create all my Product Families and sub Products (including price list, price, default lists, etc...)  all my metadata came in fine.  No code and a nice and repeatable solution around this irritating bug.
