What has your experience with Ecommerce Integration with Microsoft GP been?

Hello all,

We are in the process of replatforming our webstore with a goal of much tighter integration with Microsoft Dynamics GP amongst other feature additions for our customers.  Currently the systems are separate and very disparate. We want customers to have full visibility of the account for all orders online and offline that are pending and historical.

We are evaluating a number of platforms and would greatly appreciate the knowledge and experience of the community.  Have you built your own integrations, bought one of these platforms that are already integrated?  What was your experience with implementation?  Have you had to do custom coding with the platform and if so, how did that affect your GP upgrade?

I would love to hear your experiences, good and bad with integrating Ecommerce and Dynamics GP.

Thanks!

    Hello Elizabeth

I've been lucky enough to have participated so far in 2 e-commerce integrations with different characteristics.

One is working with web services and the other process the sales at certain hours and we have a custom Integration Engine that imports sales orders and stages those whit potential problems so the customer has time to review.

This type of e-commerce as well has different environments, on one all the components are in a single - replicated network structure and having the e-Commerce site outside this network communicating data through FTP.

The second environment has the e-commerce site outside the dynamics gp network infrastructure but does not process orders in batch, it does it real-time using web services.

I can only say so far that well planned projects have a tendency of success no matter what happens in the future as all components are documented (Update/Upgrade Wise), but it really takes some resources to plan ahead.

    hope this helps

Thanks for the reply, Francisco.  Regarding the implementation using web services, was that a custom development or are you using an out of the box platform?

Also, it is interesting that you mention the network infrastructure. This is a bit of a concern of mine.  We host our GP in house and want to continue to do so.  But our ecommerce site needs better availability than our local internet service provider can handle so we definitely want that hosted off premise. Have you had any issues getting the 2 servers to communicate fluidly?

Regarding the updates/upgrades, I'm more concerned that some of the platform providers are promising the world and that we'll end up with customizations that will make updates/upgrades very costly while they could be successful.  Every salesperson wants to tell you yes that can be done, but sometimes we need to question whether it should be done and what the future costs are.

    Hello Elizabeth

The web page/site (e-commerce part) was done i believe in Java by a company in canada, I was the contact that gave directions to the developers on how to use the web services schemas, methods and objects so their e-commerce was not out of the box but I can think that maybe someone has created a generic e-commerce solution in ISV-Central.com

Secondly about the network infrastructure I normally don't do sales pitch here, but both of the customers are hosted with RoseASP.com obviously as you expressed you most likely want to keep your on premise solution, but I will ask you about your staff availability to keep an online service "online". So far we have not had any major incidents between the 2 servers, the ones I remember is when developers hardcode passwords on connection strings or not opening the correct ports on their computers firewall to work with the infrastructure.

I missed on telling you that point you are mentioning, please review carefully and have more than 1 vendor provide you with details of an e-commerce site, that fulfill your company needs as well they having at least a basic understanding on how Dynamics GP works.

One of the customers vendor I worked was very close to be 100% unaware of Dynamics GP this drives additional time when explaining how/what/where to get information managind Dynamics GP objects.

Don't fall for those who will say yes to everything, it pays off to invest a bit of time researching and getting things done right the first time than to rush things up because their pricing is lower than the budget allocated for the project and not consider future upgrades that will raise the bill exponentially because of their intervention.

If you would like to contact us its we are at roseasp dot com

But i would suggest read up on any additional comments posted as I have a few expert friends here that their comment might bring issues I am forgetting here.
