New Workstation GP Install - GP Utilities

Posted on by 2,010

This is a GP install on a new computer for an additional user.  GP installation has finished and now GP Utilities is being run.  At the additional tasks window in GP Util., there are multiple task options.  I believe the correct option is to sync forms and reports dicstionaries to complete the install. Can anyone verify if this is correct and give me an overview of steps needed for a new install? I believe D/Ling the GP application and then running GP utilities is all.

This approach work with the biggest issue being 32 bit vs 64 bit computers. This is due to the program folder being C:\Program Files vs C:\Program Files (x86).  I will actually keep a version of each on the server. There are times when the installtion just fails despite having UAC turned off and installing as a local admin.

The alternative to a package install is to have a master copy of the Dynamics folder held.  This would be a copy of the whole folder from a machine that has everything set up the way you want.

    The steps are then:

    - Install GP from the install CD or file location

    - Copy the folder from the master location and paste over the top

This has the effect of ensuring all third party products, vba etc are in the install.

There should be no need to run Utilities on an individual install.

This method won't work if you use mapped locations for e.g. shared reports dictionaries and the mapping is different between machines.  It is also reliant on all installs being the same.

Are you doing an installation from a package file? If the installation package was created properly it will create the DSN and point to your shared forms and reports dictionaries. There is no need to do anything else. There is no synch to form and reports, the only sync is the DYNAMICS.DIC to your GL account structure setup. There is an update forms and reports but that is done once on the server. Now if you are not using a package file you will need to launch GP and go to Edit Launch File and point to the shared forms and reports dictionaries after you have created the DSN.
