Field Property Changes

I noticed its very hard to change field properties and am wondering if there are any tips for doing so.

Example: We have a CUSTOM field that I have added called "Parent ID", currently this displays as whole number, but I need this to display as text.

Existing Parent ID: 3,928

Seeking Parent ID: 3928

I noticed in "Parent ID of Account" under fields I do not have permission to change the data types, is this because data exists already? Are there any work around's?

thanks in Advance

    Hi,

Once you have created a field/attributes you cannot change the data type - you can only change the formatting and validation on that field. This is because a field is created in the database and cannot be changed without deleteing and recreating it.

I hope this answers your question.

    Hi New recruit

Yes once you put as number it will show with comma since considering it is 3 thousand plus so given this number will show you in numeric format with comma.

You need to change to text if want to show it without comma.

Once you create this field you cannot change its data type unless you recreate it again.

But again if you use text sometimes it is troublesome cause you need to validate to be always numeric unless this is an auto created field value.

And also you can create a field then use code or script to fill the value dynamicslly bases on this numeric field.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks

    Hi ,

You can't change the any field property once the field has been created in Database.

For you problem what you can do to display Whole number field as Text field, you can create one more field whose data type is Text then on load event of the form you can cope the whole field value to that text field.

I hope this answers your question. If this answer helps you can make this as Suggested answer and close this thread.

    Hi,

Once you created a field you cannot change the data type because it also reflects in the DB

If you want text field delete the field and recreate it or else create a new field in different schema name and make it as single line of text

    Hi Newrecruit,

Since you already have data in the existing field, easiest way is to create a new field of type single line of text before deleting the existing parent id field. Do an advanced find of the entity records where parent id contains data. In the advanced find columns add both the Parent id(whole number field) and the newly added single line of text field. Export the result to excel. Copy the data from Parent Id field to the new id field. Make sure you do the necessary formatting to remove the , or other characters. Later import back the excel to CRM system. Once successfully completed, you have the data now in the new field. You can delete the old parent id field and start using the new field. Rename the display name of newly created field to Parent Id.

    Hi,

You can't change the type of the field after its creation. We can change only like minimum and maximum value. If it's a custom field you can delete and create again.

There is no possible way to change data type of created fields as it's creating fields in database.

    Hope it's clear now !!

    Thanks,

CRM doesn't allow to update fields few properties, so just delete the field and recreate with the same name.
