Hi,

I read some articles on hosting AX 2012 in Windows Azure, however, how I am curious or have questions on the following:

  1. how it will be access by the client who will use the application
  2. we're using SQL 2008 R2 which I think not supported anymore, can we upgrade to SQL 2014?

    1. Users use AX clients, hosted on Azure VM and deployed as part of the system.

    2. AX 2012 in Azure uses SQL 2014

The whole installation happens automatically by Lifecycle Services. It deploys the servers, and installs SQL Server and AX components.

    Check this page:

    docs.microsoft.com/.../plan-2012-r3-deployment-azure

This chapter describes the prod system: docs.microsoft.com/.../plan-2012-r3-deployment-azure

And for the AX client you can of course use Citrix or similar solution, just like in on premises deployment. But the client must be running in Azure to prevent latency issues.

SQL 2014 is already out of support- it was not a good release - poor performance and many patches.

Go to the latest release of SQL 2016 (its not officially supported for Ax 2012 after that).

Why you would want to host it on azure I don't know.  You still have to manage the environment.

If you want to go cloud then D365 is a better option, or stay on premise, or host locally is my advice -

magic1949, you have no control of the SQL version that is installed when you install AX 2012 in Azure. According to the documentation, it still uses SQL Server 2014. Of course you could update it after the installation.

But you are right that the mainstream support for SQL Server 2014 has ended in July, extended support continues until 2024.

I agree and that is one of many reasons I would not recommend the option.
