Warehouse of transit type and planning

Hi couple of questions to validate if we have an issue coming with our configuration.

to explain. We have several warehouse as default warehouses (whs) 10 wms enabled and 30 non wms. Each as it’s own transit warehouse. Stock goes into these transit warehouse when a transfer order is shipped and is reserved in each of these until received in the receiving warehouse. So this means we have 40 total transit whs.

no two questions

1. is it really an issue to have this many transit warehouses. Where I worked before we had 3 times this amount and it didn’t seem to ever be?

2. how can these transit warehouses effect planning stream and module in D365? A consultant currently is saying it will, not clear why? One issue raised is if planning doesn’t consider the stock in transit it could lead to more say purchase being made. But to my logic stock in transit due inbound to a warehouse, regardless the number of transit warehouses isn’t going to effect this right? As an ordered in amount against such items should be considered at the TO warehouse for such transfers of stock. Even when still in transit. Am I on the right lines as I don’t know planning?

I have the same question (0)

    Hello tl82,

You really need only one Transit warehouse per site. If you have good business reasons to have more, you are okay. If not, then it just uncessary configuration but it wont hurt your operations.

The Transit Warehouses should not affect the planning stream. Master Planning is all about equilibrium between supply and demand, so any order will have an effect on Master Planning.  On the Master Plan Form, there is this setup highlighted below to include inventory transactions.  If it is enabled, then as you said the "on order" and "ordered" transactions on either side of the transit warehouse will be considered by Master Planning, so items in Transit would not be a blind spot for Master Planning.

If you want proof to shore up your conviction, it is easy to verify.  On an item that is in transit, check the Net Requirement screen and look at the references that master Planning is considering for the coverage period for both from wharehouse and to warehouse.  You will see the item leave from one,and the item being expected in the other.

    Regards,

    Danny

    Thanks Danny.

Makes sense to me and validates what I’ve seen in practice.

Ref the transit warehouses of course it should usually be like this but it was more to quickly I’d in say the on hand list which warehouse has sent the stock that was still in transit. As a manager of warehousing and stock control last 20 years I’ve seen too often if you have something like a transit warehouse that many warehouses feed into. And you end up as is the case often with stock in there not received ….nobody owns it and you end up with a big mess. But that’s outside of D365 :)
