Management Reporter setup error: The domain entered for the windows user could not be contacted.

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

When trying to install managemenet reporter I receive the following error:  The domain entered for the windows user could not be contacted.  I have tried a couple of users and get the same error and I know they are valid in AD.  How do I resolve this error?

I just experienced this issue.  In my case it was due to to a DNS issue.  If you path out to a command prompt and run nslookup + the name of your DNS server and nslookup returns UNKNOWN, then you're going to get the 'windows user could not be contacted error'...even though you can ping the server and active directory seems to be authenticating just fine.

In my case, it was a complex issue that had to do with ipv6 and my reverse lookup zone in DNS.  I actually just disabled ipv6 on the server I was installing MR and it worked fine, but a better solution is getting the DNS set up to handle ipv6.  I'm sure there are many other DNS issues that could cause the same problem, but until you can do the nslookup successfully from the MR Install server to the DNS server, you're going to run into this problem.

Not sure why this worked but it did.  I uninstalled MR  then tried to install the newest release - some of the same issues, uninstalled again and install new release again, then uninstalled and installed the original release and it worked.  It sounds odd but I installed useing the same users each time - very odd but it is working.

    Bill,

I can't see any reason why this isn't working. Using the MA\User or ma-electric\Admin should both work. There may be a specific environmental issue here. Unfortunately I can't give you much more to check. You may have to log a support ticket and have someone dial in to review the install with you.

    Ryan,

Thanks for the reply, here is the info you requested.

This is a Windows Server 2008 with SP  2

Domain functional level is Windows 2000 mixed

Forest functional level is windows 2000

Server installing on is  DYNAMICSSQL a member of the domain – FULL computer name is DynamicsSQL.ma-electric.org

Domain controller is MAPDC  - FULL computer name is MAPDC.ma-electric.org

    I’ve tried

    - MA\Administrator

    - DYNAMICSSQL\Administrator

    - MA\User (that is an Administrator on DynmaicsSQL)

    - ma-electric.org\Administrator

    Thanks for your help

    Bill

    Bill,

Can you answer these questions and provide examples of the fully qualified user name being  used?

Otherwise, can you confirm if this is a Windows 2008R2 machine? i believe there is a Windows specific issue that can cause name resolution depending on the machine name being used.

    1. Verify the functional level of the domain is Windows 2000 or higher. If the functional level is NT 4 then Management Reporter will not install.

    2. Are there any domain trusts involved here? i.e. are you trying to cross users in microsoft.com with the domain contoso.com?

    3. Does your domain have any aliases that you are trying to use? I've had one or two customers that had issues trying to use domain\user instead of west.domain.local\user or the other way around.

    4. Verify this machine you are installing from (and installing to) are on the domain.

    5. Verify you are installing MR as a domain user with local admin rights and not the local administrator account.

    Thanks

    Ryan

I am also experiencing this issue.  I have tried multiple domain users with admin privilages on the server and still recieve this error.  Any suggestions would be helpful.  Of course the Process Service will install but when I try to install the Application Service even though it accepts teh Windows Authentication for teh Database server it fails at the "Specify Management Reporter Adminstrator" step.

    Andrea,

I'm not sure then what is going on. You will probably want to open a support ticket and have someone dial in and review with you. There must be some other network related issue going on.

    Thanks

We are on AD w/a 2008 server I think but I know we don't have any W2k servers remaining.  The Domain Trusts has no rocords showing in the domain functional or forest functional level.  There are no records on the trusts tab.

I am not tryig to cross servers and don't have any aliases that I'm aware of.  I have verified that the server was on the domain ... even removed and readded it.

    Hi Andrea,

    A few things to check:

    1. Verify the functional level of the domain is Windows 2000 or higher. If the functional level is NT 4 then Management Reporter will not install.

    2. Are there any domain trusts involved here? i.e. are you trying to cross users in microsoft.com with the domain contoso.com?

    Thanks

I am in an early step where you are prompted for the service account.  The account I am using actually is the admin account for other services on the same server (i.e. econnect plus others).
