Open new inventory tracking dimension

Hi Community,

I want to add a new tracking inventory dimension and have to utilize it in all posting documents like sales order, purchase order, movement journals etc. I saw invent Dim table in visual studio and see MS has already created inventoryDimension1 - inventoryDimension12 fields. I think I can utilize it to create a new tracking dimension. Can anyone suggest how can I use this as new dimension for the system? Is there any additional technical and functional things involved while using it? I see ISV solutions and vendors are using these fields in some blogs. Can anyone suggest the best solution of using these additional inventoryDimension1 - inventoryDimension12 fields

    Hi Ammad,

In addition to the reply from Kevin, Microsoft has documentation how to extend the inventory dimensions utilizing the InventDimension1-12. Add new inventory dimensions through extension - Finance & Operations | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Learn

    Hi,

You can consider using the existing inventoryDimension1 - inventoryDimension12 fields in the inventDim table. Here are some steps to guide you:

    1. Identify the purpose and requirements of your new tracking inventory dimension. Determine how it will be used and what data it needs to capture.

    2. In Visual Studio, open the AOT and navigate to the inventDim table.

    3. Customize the inventDim table by adding additional fields for your new tracking dimension. You can use inventoryDimension1 - inventoryDimension12 fields for this purpose. Rename them to reflect the name and purpose of your new dimension.

    4. Modify the relevant forms, such as sales order, purchase order, and movement journals, to include the new tracking dimension fields. This will allow users to enter and view data for the new dimension in these documents.

    5. Update any business logic or processes that rely on the inventory dimensions to include your new tracking dimension. This may involve making changes to code, workflows, or configurations to ensure the dimension is correctly utilized.

    Best regards,
    Kevin
